Super 8 film

Super 8 mm film is a motion picture film format released in 1965 by Eastman Kodak as an improvement of the older "Double" or "Regular" 8 mm home movie format.

The film is nominally 8 mm wide, exactly the same as the older standard 8 mm film, and also has perforations on only one side. However, the dimensions of the perforations are smaller than those on older 8 mm film, which allowed the exposed area to be made larger. The Super 8 standard also specifically allocates the border opposite the perforations for an oxide stripe upon which sound can be magnetically recorded.

Unlike Super 35, the film stock used for Super 8 is not compatible with standard 8mm film cameras.

There are several different varieties of the film system used for shooting, but the final film in each case has the same dimensions. By far the most popular system was the Kodak system.

Super 8 is a 2011 American science fiction thriller film written, co-produced, and directed by J. J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. The film stars Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning and Kyle Chandler and tells the story of a group of young teenagers who are filming their own Super 8 movie when a train derails, releasing a dangerous presence into their town. The movie was filmed in Weirton, West Virginia and surrounding areas.

Super 8 was released on June 10, 2011, in conventional and IMAX theaters in the United States. The film was well received, with critics praising the film for its nostalgia, visual effects, musical score, and for the performances of its young actors, particularly those of Fanning and newcomer Courtney. It was also a commercial success, grossing over $260 million against a $50 million budget. The film received several awards and nominations; primarily in technical and special effects categories, as well as for Courtney and Fanning's performances as the film's two young leads.

Super 8½

Super 8¹⁄₂ is a 1994 satirical drama film written and directed by Bruce La Bruce. The film is about a failing pornographic film director who enters into a partnership with a lesbian filmmaker. It becomes clear that she has her own agenda and is exploiting him to help her succeed in her own project.

The film premiered at the 1994 Toronto Film Festival and was shown in the midnight series at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival.

Super Eight (hockey)

The Super Eight is the common name of the boys high school ice hockey tournament that determines the state champion of Massachusetts. The tournament is officially called the Division I–A tournament.

Both public and private high schools from the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association compete in this tournament. The Independent School League does not compete in the MIAA and has its own league and playoff tournament.

The Super Eight tournament is regarded as one of the premier high school hockey post-season tournaments in the country and the participating teams in the tournament are considered among the best high school hockey teams in the country. The tournament has produced numerous NHL players, several national championship teams, and has set several Massachusetts high school hockey attendance records since the tournaments inception.

The format of the Super Eight tournament was a round-robin in which the top eight Division I teams in the state compete against each other. Since 2001, there are actually 10 teams selected, with the bottom four seeds playing a play-in game. The winners of those games compete in the Super Eight Tournament with a single-elimination format, while the losers return to the respective Division I tournaments (e.g. Division I North tournament) and are seeded at the top of their respective tournaments.
