In this video, I will talk about ten good things to know about the information technology business before you decide ongoing into a career in IT. I will describe some positive aspects of being in the IT business and some issues that you might face during your career. Some of the positive aspects of an IT career are a good salary, strong demand for programmers and IT managers, and being able to gain an in-depth understanding of your business. Some limitations might be working long hours, the possibility of working weekends and holidays, and potentially stressful situations turn downtime for troubleshooting problems. When I first received this question I must confess I thought it was a really silly question... C'mon, how in the earth would someone not know what IT is?
However, after reading the question, I became aware that it could really help a lot of people because I see a lot of developers making some confusion with this.
Basically, the most basic definition for IT is:
"Set of tools, processes, and methodologies (such as coding/programming, data communications, data conversion, storage and retrieval, systems analysis and design, systems control) and associated equipment employed to collect, process, and present information. In broad terms, IT also includes office automation, multimedia, and telecommunications."

Information technology
Information technology (IT) is the application of computers and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data, often in the context of a business or other enterprise. IT is considered a subset of information and communications technology (ICT). In 2012, Zuppo proposed an ICT hierarchy where each hierarchy level "contain some degree of commonality in that they are related to technologies that facilitate the transfer of information and various types of electronically mediated communications.". Business/IT was one level of the ICT hierarchy.
The term is commonly used as a synonym for computers and computer networks, but it also encompasses other information distribution technologies such as television and telephones. Several industries are associated with information technology, including computer hardware, software, electronics, semiconductors, internet, telecom equipment, engineering, healthcare, e-commerce and computer services.
Humans have been storing, retrieving, manipulating and communicating information since the Sumerians in Mesopotamia developed writing in about 3000 BC, but the term information technology in its modern sense first appeared in a 1958 article published in the Harvard Business Review; authors Harold J. Leavitt and Thomas L. Whisler commented that "the new technology does not yet have a single established name. We shall call it information technology (IT)." Their definition consists of three categories: techniques for processing, the application of statistical and mathematical methods to decision-making, and the simulation of higher-order thinking through computer programs.

However, after reading the question, I became aware that it could really help a lot of people because I see a lot of developers making some confusion with this.
Basically, the most basic definition for IT is:
"Set of tools, processes, and methodologies (such as coding/programming, data communications, data conversion, storage and retrieval, systems analysis and design, systems control) and associated equipment employed to collect, process, and present information. In broad terms, IT also includes office automation, multimedia, and telecommunications."

In this video, I will talk about ten good things to know about the information technology business before you decide ongoing into a career in IT. I will describe some positive aspects of being in the IT business and some issues that you might face during your career. Some of the positive aspects of an IT career are a good salary, strong demand for programmers and IT managers, and being able to gain an in-depth understanding of your business. Some limitations might be working long hours, the possibility of working weekends and holidays, and potentially stressful situations turn downtime for troubleshooting problems. I will also present some basic statistics about average salaries for various IT positions, and giving you a feel for the type of demand in today's market.

When I first received this question I must confess I thought it was a really silly question... C'mon, how in the earth would someone not know what IT is?
However, after reading the question, I became aware that it could really help a lot of people because I see a lot of developers making some confusion with this.
Basically, the most basic definition for IT is:
"Set of tools, processes, and methodologies (such as coding/programming, data communications, data conversion, storage and retrieval, systems analysis and design, systems control) and associated equipment employed to collect, process, and present information. In broad terms, IT also includes office automation, multimedia, and telecommunications."

Information technology
Information technology (IT) is the application of computers and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data, often in the context of a business or other enterprise. IT is considered a subset of information and communications technology (ICT). In 2012, Zuppo proposed an ICT hierarchy where each hierarchy level "contain some degree of commonality in that they are related to technologies that facilitate the transfer of information and various types of electronically mediated communications.". Business/IT was one level of the ICT hierarchy.
The term is commonly used as a synonym for computers and computer networks, but it also encompasses other information distribution technologies such as television and telephones. Several industries are associated with information technology, including computer hardware, software, electronics, semiconductors, internet, telecom equipment, engineering, healthcare, e-commerce and computer services.
Humans have been storing, retrieving, manipulating and communicating information since the Sumerians in Mesopotamia developed writing in about 3000 BC, but the term information technology in its modern sense first appeared in a 1958 article published in the Harvard Business Review; authors Harold J. Leavitt and Thomas L. Whisler commented that "the new technology does not yet have a single established name. We shall call it information technology (IT)." Their definition consists of three categories: techniques for processing, the application of statistical and mathematical methods to decision-making, and the simulation of higher-order thinking through computer programs.
