The Horrors Of Tudor Dentistry | Hidden Killers | Timeline
Dr Suzannah Lipscomb takes us back to Tudor times in search of the household killers of the era.
It was a great age of exploration and science where adventurers returned from the New World with exotic goods previously unknown in Europe. An era in which the newly emergent middle classes had, for the first time, money for luxuries and early consumer goods, many of which contained hidden dangers.
The period also saw a radical evolution in the very idea of 'home'. For the likes of Tudor merchants, their houses became multi-room structures instead of the single-room habitations that had been the norm (aristocracy excepted). Most of it focuses on the reign of his son, Henry VIII and his wars with France, his many wives and his notorious break with Rome and the formation of the Church of England.

Five Tudor monarchs sat on the throne of England and Ireland from 1485 to 1603. The family earned their royal rights through strategic planning and battlefield prowess, and kept them because of intellect, strength and sheer determination. The Tudors, one of England’s most powerful and famous royal dynasties, knitted together a fragmented and small island nation that became one of the world’s financial, colonial and technological superpowers.

This forced the homebuilders of the day to engineer radical new design solutions and technologies, some of which were lethal.
Suzannah discovers that in Tudor houses the threat of a grisly, unpleasant death was never far away in a world (and a home) still mired in the grime and filth of the medieval period - and she shows how we still live with the legacy of some of these killers today.

In this episode we take a look at the top 5 most humiliating methods of punishment employed by the Tudors in 16th century England. The Tudors were partial to the brutal and barbaric public punishments used for severe crimes, however they equally enjoyed the public penance of lesser crimes too.
A common theme in the punishment methods used by the Tudors was public penance. The concept was simple; punish a criminal openly in front of the general public to deter others from committing the same act in the future. Shame was a powerful tool for preventing future crimes, but the methods used to enforce that shame were often brutal and painful too.
These methods of punishment varied from being physically restricted in public to be abused in the stocks or the cucking stool; through to branding with red hot irons, the miserable and painful scolds bridle, and the enforced wearing a beer barrel called “The Drunkards Cloak”; the Tudors were at their most creative when it came to inflicting punishment, misery, and public humiliation on their felons.

This episode covers the aftermath of Wars of the Roses through the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII of the Tudor dynasty. It covers Henry VII's attempts to stabilise the kingdom and bring it powerful allies. Most of it focuses on the reign of his son, Henry VIII and his wars with France, his many wives and his notorious break with Rome and the formation of the Church of England.
Recommended Books:
John Guy, 'Tudor England' - A very detailed introductory book which covers all of the Tudors and particularly focuses on Henry VIII. Gives a good overview of court intrigue, too.
Robert Titler and Norman Jones (eds.), A Companion to Tudor Britain - Much more detailed (best for undergrads) thematically arranged book which focus more on religious, social and economic changes than political. Has good detail concerning Wales and Scotland as well.
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.
