The Tudors were partial to the brutal and barbaric public punishments used for severe crimes, however they equally enjoyed the public penance of lesser crimes too. A common theme in the punishment methods used by the Tudors was public penance. The concept was simple; punish a criminal openly in front of the general public to deter others from committing the same act in the future. Shame was a powerful tool for preventing future crimes, but the methods used to enforce that shame were often brutal and painful too. These methods of punishment varied from being physically restricted in public to be abused in the stocks or the cucking stool; through to branding with red hot irons, the miserable and painful scolds bridle, and the enforced wearing a beer barrel called “The Drunkards Cloak”; the Tudors were at their most creative when it came to inflicting punishment, misery, and public humiliation on their felons.
