Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (/ˈɡɔɪə/; Spanish: [fɾanˈθisko xoˈse ðe ˈɣoʝa i luˈθjentes] (30 March 1746 – 16 April 1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker. He is considered the most important Spanish artist of late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout his long career was a commentator and chronicler of his era. Immensely successful in his lifetime, Goya is often referred to as both the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns.
He was born to a modest family in 1746 in the village of Fuendetodos in Aragon. He studied painting from age 14 under José Luzán y Martinez and moved to Madrid to study with Anton Raphael Mengs. He married Josefa Bayeu in 1775; the couple's life together was characterised by an almost constant series of pregnancies and miscarriages. He became a court painter to the Spanish Crown in 1786 and the early portion of his career is marked by portraits commissioned by the Spanish aristocracy and royalty, as well as the Rococo style tapestry cartoons designed for the royal palace.
ARY Digital, a subsidiary of the ARY Group, is a popular Pakistani television network available in Pakistan, the Middle East, North America and Europe. The ARY Group of companies is a Dubai-based holding company founded by a Pakistani businessman, Abdul Razzak Yaqoob (ARY). The network caters to the needs of South Asians, particularly the Pakistani diaspora. The channel is considered to be a pioneer in Pakistani media and broadcasting industry, and has an expanding network of channels, each with an independent focus.
ARY Digital, formerly known as the Pakistani Channel, was launched in the United Kingdom in December 2000 to cater to the growing demands of South Asian entertainment in the region . It uses Samacom, a monopolising uplink provider based in the UAE, as the uplink teleport station.
The channel started off with a format more closely resembling that of PTV Prime and other South Asian channels where it provided slots for soaps in general while presenting an hourly slot for news headlines. Although, flaming political talk shows and dramas were the main priority when it came to programming, the network soon was hailed for its news coverage.
The Goya Awards, known in Spanish as los Premios Goya, are Spain's main national annual film awards.
The awards were established in 1987, a year after the founding of the Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España (Spanish Academy of Cinematic Art and Science), and the first awards ceremony took place on March 16, 1987 at the Teatro Lope de Vega, Madrid. The ceremony continues to take place annually at Centro de Congresos Príncipe Felipe, around the end of January/start of February, and awards are given to films produced during the previous year.
The award itself is a small bronze bust of Francisco de Goya created by the sculptor José Luis Fernández.
To reward the best Spanish films of each year, the Spanish Academy of Motion Pictures and Arts decided to create the Goya Awards. The inaugural ceremony took place on March 17, 1987 at the Lope de Vega theatre in Madrid. In 2000, the ceremony took place in Barcelona, at the Barcelona Auditorium. In 2003, a large number of film professionals took advantage of the goya awards ceremony to express their opposition to government support of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. In 2004, the AVT (an association against terrorism in Spain) demonstrated against terrorism and ETA, a paramilitary organization of Basque separatists, in front of the Lope de Vega theatre. In 2005, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was the first president in the history of Spain to attend the event. In 2013, minister of culture and education José Ignacio Wert did not attend, saying he had “other things to do.” Some actors said that this decision reflected the government's lack of respect for their profession and industry.

Thank you for watching. Video presentation, music, and voice over: Byron Thomas.
The Spanish painter Francisco Goya is often said to be both the last of the old masters and the first of the modern ones, which is quite the achievement. It's hard enough to be a master of one period, let alone two, but Goya seems to pull it off. Much of his success is owed to his prodigious talents as a painter, but another equally important factor, as is so often the case was the rapidly changing times he lived in. This was the period when the ideas of the Enlightenment were spreading across Europe and calling into question many of the traditional beliefs society was organised around. Writers such as Voltaire, Roseau and Locke had all proposed new ideas which questioned traditional power structures of church and state and called for more rational and humanistic approaches to organ...
In between stately court portraits and high-society commissions, Spanish artist Francisco de Goya (Spanish, 1746–1828) was attuned to life’s darker side, channeling hair-raising occult phenomena and existential terrors. This is Several Circles, where we tell the stories of extraordinary artists from across history and the present day. We believe art history content should be accessible—free of charge and impenetrable jargon, but abundant in fascinating facts, illuminating analyses, and entertaining anecdotes. Each episode is written and hosted by Rachel, an art journalist-turned-copywriter at The Met, and produced by Jason, a New York City art technician.
