Disambiguation or Entity Linking is the assignment of a knowledge base identifier (Wikidata, Wikipedia) to a named entity. Our goal was to improve an MVP model by adding newly created knowledge while maintaining competitive F1 scores.
Taking an entity linking model from MVP into production in a spaCy-native pipeline architecture posed several data science and engineering challenges, such as hyperparameter estimation and knowledge enhancement, which we addressed by taking advantage of the engineering tools Docker and Kubernetes to semi-automate training as an on-demand job.
We also discuss some of our learnings and process improvements that were needed to strike a balance between data science goals and engineering constraints and present our current work on improving performance through BERT-embedding based contextual similarity.

btw one thing i forgot to mention in the video is that the titles are spelled wrong on a few of these releases. the mgm/fox edition of Death Wish II spells the "II" as "2" when it's supposed to be roman numerals and also on the nsm records mediabook of the fifth movie it says on the spine and front cover "Death Wish 5" when the correct title is "Death Wish V: The Face Of Death" (so roman numeral V instead of 5 plus the subtitle; The Face of Death). This may be stupid information to some people but as someone who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder on certain things i will admit it does bother me.

"Here we present a general supervised framework for record deduplication and author-disambiguation via Spark. This work differentiates itself by - Application of Databricks and AWS makes this a scalable implementation. Compute resources are comparably lower than traditional legacy technology using big boxes 24/7. Scalability is crucial as Elsevier's Scopus data, the biggest scientific abstract repository, covers roughly 250 million authorships from 70 million abstracts covering a few hundred years. - We create a fingerprint for each content by deep learning and/or word2vec algorithms to expedite pairwise similarity calculation. These encoders substantially reduce compute time while maintaining semantic similarity (unlike traditional TFIDF or predefined taxonomies). We will briefly discuss how to optimize word2vec training with high parallelization. Moreover, we show how these encoders can be used to derive a standard representation for all our entities namely such as documents, authors, users, journals, etc. This standard representation can simplify the recommendation problem into a pairwise similarity search and hence it can offer a basic recommender for cross-product applications where we may not have a dedicate recommender engine designed. - Traditional author-disambiguation or record deduplication algorithms are batch-processing with small to no training data. However, we have roughly 25 million authorships that are manually curated or corrected upon user feedback. Hence, it is crucial to maintain historical profiles and hence we have developed a machine learning implementation to deal with data streams and process them in mini batches or one document at a time. We will discuss how to measure the accuracy of such a system, how to tune it and how to process the raw data of pairwise similarity function into final clusters. Lessons learned from this talk can help all sort of companies where they want to integrate their data or deduplicate their user/customer/product databases.

In computational linguistics, word-sense disambiguation (WSD) is an open problem of natural language processing and ontology. WSD is identifying which sense of a word (i.e. meaning) is used in a sentence, when the word has multiple meanings. The solution to this problem impacts other computer-related writing, such as discourse, improving relevance of search engines, anaphora resolution, coherence, inference et cetera.
The human brain is quite proficient at word-sense disambiguation. The fact that natural language is formed in a way that requires so much of it is a reflection of that neurologic reality. In other words, human language developed in a way that reflects (and also has helped to shape) the innate ability provided by the brain's neural networks. In computer science and the information technology that it enables, it has been a long-term challenge to develop the ability in computers to do natural language processing and machine learning.
To date, a rich variety of techniques have been researched, from dictionary-based methods that use the knowledge encoded in lexical resources, to supervised machine learning methods in which a classifier is trained for each distinct word on a corpus of manually sense-annotated examples, to completely unsupervised methods that cluster occurrences of words, thereby inducing word senses. Among these, supervised learning approaches have been the most successful algorithms to date.
Accuracy of current algorithms is difficult to state without a host of caveats. In English, accuracy at the coarse-grained (homograph) level is routinely above 90%, with some methods on particular homographs achieving over 96%. On finer-grained sense distinctions, top accuracies from 59.1% to 69.0% have been reported in recent evaluation exercises (SemEval-2007, Senseval-2), where the baseline accuracy of the simplest possible algorithm of always choosing the most frequent sense was 51.4% and 57%, respectively.
Disambiguation requires two strict inputs: a dictionary to specify the senses which are to be disambiguated and a corpus of language data to be disambiguated (in some methods, a training corpus of language examples is also required). WSD task has two variants: "lexical sample" and "all words" task. The former comprises disambiguating the occurrences of a small sample of target words which were previously selected, while in the latter all the words in a piece of running text need to be disambiguated. The latter is deemed a more realistic form of evaluation, but the corpus is more expensive to produce because human annotators have to read the definitions for each word in the sequence every time they need to make a tagging judgement, rather than once for a block of instances for the same target word.
To give a hint how all this works, consider two examples of the distinct senses that exist for the (written) word "bass":
1. a type of fish
2. tones of low frequency
and the sentences:
1. I went fishing for some sea bass.
2. The bass line of the song is too weak.
To a human, it is obvious that the first sentence is using the word "bass (fish)", as in the former sense above and in the second sentence, the word "bass (instrument)" is being used as in the latter sense below. Developing algorithms to replicate this human ability can often be a difficult task, as is further exemplified by the implicit equivocation between "bass (sound)" and "bass (musical instrument)".

USA Network
USA Network (commonly referred to as simply "USA") is an American basic cable and satellite television channel that is owned by the NBCUniversal Cable division of NBCUniversal, itself a subsidiary of Comcast. Once a minor player in basic cable, the network has steadily gained popularity due to its original programming; USA also broadcasts syndicated reruns of current and former "network television" (i.e., broadcast) series and theatrically-released feature films, as well as limited sports programming.
As of July 2015, USA Network is available to approximately 95.567 million pay television households (82.1% of households with at least one television set) in the United States.
History
Paramount and Universal ownership
USA Network originally launched on September 22, 1977 as the Madison Square Garden Network (not to be confused with the New York City regional sports network of the same name). The network was founded by cable provider UA-Columbia Cablevision and Kay Koplovitz. The channel was one of the first national cable television channels, using satellite delivery as opposed to microwave relay to distribute its programming to cable systems. Initially, the network ran a mix of college and less well-known professional sports, similar to those found during the early years of ESPN. The channel began its broadcast day after 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on weekdays and 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on weekends.

Disambiguation or Entity Linking is the assignment of a knowledge base identifier (Wikidata, Wikipedia) to a named entity. Our goal was to improve an MVP model by adding newly created knowledge while maintaining competitive F1 scores.
Taking an entity linking model from MVP into production in a spaCy-native pipeline architecture posed several data science and engineering challenges, such as hyperparameter estimation and knowledge enhancement, which we addressed by taking advantage of the engineering tools Docker and Kubernetes to semi-automate training as an on-demand job.
We also discuss some of our learnings and process improvements that were needed to strike a balance between data science goals and engineering constraints and present our current work on improving performance through BERT-embedding based contextual similarity.

btw one thing i forgot to mention in the video is that the titles are spelled wrong on a few of these releases. the mgm/fox edition of Death Wish II spells the "II" as "2" when it's supposed to be roman numerals and also on the nsm records mediabook of the fifth movie it says on the spine and front cover "Death Wish 5" when the correct title is "Death Wish V: The Face Of Death" (so roman numeral V instead of 5 plus the subtitle; The Face of Death). This may be stupid information to some people but as someone who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder on certain things i will admit it does bother me.

Scalability is crucial as Elsevier's Scopus data, the biggest scientific abstract repository, covers roughly 250 million authorships from 70 million abstracts covering a few hundred years. - We create a fingerprint for each content by deep learning and/or word2vec algorithms to expedite pairwise similarity calculation. These encoders substantially reduce compute time while maintaining semantic similarity (unlike traditional TFIDF or predefined taxonomies). We will briefly discuss how to optimize word2vec training with high parallelization. Moreover, we show how these encoders can be used to derive a standard representation for all our entities namely such as documents, authors, users, journals, etc. This standard representation can simplify the recommendation problem into a pairwise similarity search and hence it can offer a basic recommender for cross-product applications where we may not have a dedicate recommender engine designed. - Traditional author-disambiguation or record deduplication algorithms are batch-processing with small to no training data. However, we have roughly 25 million authorships that are manually curated or corrected upon user feedback. Hence, it is crucial to maintain historical profiles and hence we have developed a machine learning implementation to deal with data streams and process them in mini batches or one document at a time. We will discuss how to measure the accuracy of such a system, how to tune it and how to process the raw data of pairwise similarity function into final clusters. The human brain is quite proficient at word-sense disambiguation. The fact that natural language is formed in a way that requires so much of it is a reflection of that neurologic reality. In other words, human language developed in a way that reflects (and also has helped to shape) the innate ability provided by the brain's neural networks. In computer science and the information technology that it enables, it has been a long-term challenge to develop the ability in computers to do natural language processing and machine learning.
To date, a rich variety of techniques have been researched, from dictionary-based methods that use the knowledge encoded in lexical resources, to supervised machine learning methods in which a classifier is trained for each distinct word on a corpus of manually sense-annotated examples, to completely unsupervised methods that cluster occurrences of words, thereby inducing word senses. Among these, supervised learning approaches have been the most successful algorithms to date.
Accuracy of current algorithms is difficult to state without a host of caveats. In English, accuracy at the coarse-grained (homograph) level is routinely above 90%, with some methods on particular homographs achieving over 96%. On finer-grained sense distinctions, top accuracies from 59.1% to 69.0% have been reported in recent evaluation exercises (SemEval-2007, Senseval-2), where the baseline accuracy of the simplest possible algorithm of always choosing the most frequent sense was 51.4% and 57%, respectively.
Disambiguation requires two strict inputs: a dictionary to specify the senses which are to be disambiguated and a corpus of language data to be disambiguated (in some methods, a training corpus of language examples is also required). WSD task has two variants: "lexical sample" and "all words" task. The former comprises disambiguating the occurrences of a small sample of target words which were previously selected, while in the latter all the words in a piece of running text need to be disambiguated. You know, let's say if I'm trying to watch, let's say, some kind of movie here, Fast and Furious, okay, that's trending nowadays. So we're gonna try to watch it here and see what happens, of course, it's going to tell me that this video is not available in your location, I'm not even getting the chance to kind of pick my provider or anything like that is just blocked. So how are you going to remove this block? By the way, you're still gonna get this if you're outside the United States, even if you're logged into your account, your paid account. But there are lots of free stuff that you can watch without a paid account here. So that's why it's a cool service. So what you can do is, of course, use a VPN. Now, just as a disclaimer, a VPN service should never be used to bypass copyright regulations. I don't promote, condone, or endorse the use of the service for such purposes. But if you're interested in ExpressVPN, you'll find links, especially those and discounts in the description down below, as well as a review, if you'd like to know the ins and outs of the VPN. And we're using ExpressVPN, simply because it is able to unblock the most amount of streaming services, and you know, their servers are always being updated. So that they're always able to kind of rip through these geo-restrictions, because if you to know, a lot of these websites and streaming services, including the big ones, as well as the obscure ones, they kind of implement these anti VPN traffic software. So if you're using a, let's say, an unreliable VPN, it's not really going to work for you, you, it's still going to give you this message. And some websites kind of tell you that, hey, you're using a VPN, go ahead and disconnect that. And then you can use our service. But either way, you know, you're just not going to work if you're outside the appropriate region. So, you know, this is why I'm gonna be using Express VPN, which is a VPN that is very well known for being able to kind of rip through or just not really care about any of these geo-restrictions or anti VPN traffic blocks. So what I would recommend is, of course, now use the lightweight UDP protocol, which you can use automatically for sure. But lower up is what I'd recommend for just, you know, consistency. Of course, we're looking for a United States server here, since this is a US kind of service. So yeah, we're going to find that under America's Of course, I already have the San Francisco server already here. So I'm just going to turn it on. And as soon as, as soon as it's on, I'm going to wait just a couple more seconds for the network to come back in to just to kick back in. And I'm just gonna hit refresh. But there are lots of free stuff that you can watch without a paid account here. So that's why it's a cool service. So what you can do is, of course, use a VPN. Now, just as a disclaimer, a VPN service should never be used to bypass copyright regulations. I don't promote, condone, or endorse the use of the service for such purposes. But if you're interested in ExpressVPN, you'll find links, especially those and discounts in the description down below, as well as a review, if you'd like to know the ins and outs of the VPN. So, you know, this is why I'm gonna be using Express VPN, which is a VPN that is very well known for being able to kind of rip through or just not really care about any of these geo-restrictions or anti VPN traffic blocks. So what I would recommend is, of course, now use the lightweight UDP protocol, which you can use automatically for sure. But lower up is what I'd recommend for just, you know, consistency. Of course, we're looking for a United States server here, since this is a US kind of service. Disambiguation or Entity Linking is the assignment of a knowledge base identifier (Wikidata, Wikipedia) to a named entity. Our goal was to improve an MVP model by adding newly created knowledge while maintaining competitive F1 scores.
Taking an entity linking model from MVP into production in a spaCy-native pipeline architecture posed several data science and engineering challenges, such as hyperparameter estimation and knowledge enhancement, which we addressed by taking advantage of the engineering tools Docker and Kubernetes to semi-automate training as an on-demand job.
We also discuss some of our learnings and process improvements that were needed to strike a balance between data science goals and engineering constraints and present our current work on improving performance through BERT-embedding based contextual similarity.

btw one thing i forgot to mention in the video is that the titles are spelled wrong on a few of these releases. the mgm/fox edition of Death Wish II spells the "II" as "2" when it's supposed to be roman numerals and also on the nsm records mediabook of the fifth movie it says on the spine and front cover "Death Wish 5" when the correct title is "Death Wish V: The Face Of Death" (so roman numeral V instead of 5 plus the subtitle; The Face of Death). This may be stupid information to some people but as someone who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder on certain things i will admit it does bother me.

"Here we present a general supervised framework for record deduplication and author-disambiguation via Spark. This work differentiates itself by - Application of Databricks and AWS makes this a scalable implementation. Compute resources are comparably lower than traditional legacy technology using big boxes 24/7. Scalability is crucial as Elsevier's Scopus data, the biggest scientific abstract repository, covers roughly 250 million authorships from 70 million abstracts covering a few hundred years. - We create a fingerprint for each content by deep learning and/or word2vec algorithms to expedite pairwise similarity calculation. These encoders substantially reduce compute time while maintaining semantic similarity (unlike traditional TFIDF or predefined taxonomies). We will briefly discuss how to optimize word2vec training with high parallelization. Moreover, we show how these encoders can be used to derive a standard representation for all our entities namely such as documents, authors, users, journals, etc. This standard representation can simplify the recommendation problem into a pairwise similarity search and hence it can offer a basic recommender for cross-product applications where we may not have a dedicate recommender engine designed. - Traditional author-disambiguation or record deduplication algorithms are batch-processing with small to no training data. However, we have roughly 25 million authorships that are manually curated or corrected upon user feedback. Hence, it is crucial to maintain historical profiles and hence we have developed a machine learning implementation to deal with data streams and process them in mini batches or one document at a time. We will discuss how to measure the accuracy of such a system, how to tune it and how to process the raw data of pairwise similarity function into final clusters. Lessons learned from this talk can help all sort of companies where they want to integrate their data or deduplicate their user/customer/product databases.

In computational linguistics, word-sense disambiguation (WSD) is an open problem of natural language processing and ontology. WSD is identifying which sense of a word (i.e. meaning) is used in a sentence, when the word has multiple meanings. The solution to this problem impacts other computer-related writing, such as discourse, improving relevance of search engines, anaphora resolution, coherence, inference et cetera.
The human brain is quite proficient at word-sense disambiguation. The fact that natural language is formed in a way that requires so much of it is a reflection of that neurologic reality. In other words, human language developed in a way that reflects (and also has helped to shape) the innate ability provided by the brain's neural networks. In computer science and the information technology that it enables, it has been a long-term challenge to develop the ability in computers to do natural language processing and machine learning.
To date, a rich variety of techniques have been researched, from dictionary-based methods that use the knowledge encoded in lexical resources, to supervised machine learning methods in which a classifier is trained for each distinct word on a corpus of manually sense-annotated examples, to completely unsupervised methods that cluster occurrences of words, thereby inducing word senses. Among these, supervised learning approaches have been the most successful algorithms to date.
Accuracy of current algorithms is difficult to state without a host of caveats. In English, accuracy at the coarse-grained (homograph) level is routinely above 90%, with some methods on particular homographs achieving over 96%. On finer-grained sense distinctions, top accuracies from 59.1% to 69.0% have been reported in recent evaluation exercises (SemEval-2007, Senseval-2), where the baseline accuracy of the simplest possible algorithm of always choosing the most frequent sense was 51.4% and 57%, respectively.
Disambiguation requires two strict inputs: a dictionary to specify the senses which are to be disambiguated and a corpus of language data to be disambiguated (in some methods, a training corpus of language examples is also required). WSD task has two variants: "lexical sample" and "all words" task. The former comprises disambiguating the occurrences of a small sample of target words which were previously selected, while in the latter all the words in a piece of running text need to be disambiguated. The latter is deemed a more realistic form of evaluation, but the corpus is more expensive to produce because human annotators have to read the definitions for each word in the sequence every time they need to make a tagging judgement, rather than once for a block of instances for the same target word.
To give a hint how all this works, consider two examples of the distinct senses that exist for the (written) word "bass":
1. a type of fish
2. tones of low frequency
and the sentences:
1. I went fishing for some sea bass.
2. The bass line of the song is too weak.
To a human, it is obvious that the first sentence is using the word "bass (fish)", as in the former sense above and in the second sentence, the word "bass (instrument)" is being used as in the latter sense below. Developing algorithms to replicate this human ability can often be a difficult task, as is further exemplified by the implicit equivocation between "bass (sound)" and "bass (musical instrument)".

You know, let's say if I'm trying to watch, let's say, some kind of movie here, Fast and Furious, okay, that's trending nowadays. So we're gonna try to watch it here and see what happens, of course, it's going to tell me that this video is not available in your location, I'm not even getting the chance to kind of pick my provider or anything like that is just blocked. So how are you going to remove this block? By the way, you're still gonna get this if you're outside the United States, even if you're logged into your account, your paid account. But there are lots of free stuff that you can watch without a paid account here. So that's why it's a cool service. So what you can do is, of course, use a VPN. Now, just as a disclaimer, a VPN service should never be used to bypass copyright regulations. I don't promote, condone, or endorse the use of the service for such purposes. But if you're interested in ExpressVPN, you'll find links, especially those and discounts in the description down below, as well as a review, if you'd like to know the ins and outs of the VPN. And we're using ExpressVPN, simply because it is able to unblock the most amount of streaming services, and you know, their servers are always being updated. So that they're always able to kind of rip through these geo-restrictions, because if you to know, a lot of these websites and streaming services, including the big ones, as well as the obscure ones, they kind of implement these anti VPN traffic software. So if you're using a, let's say, an unreliable VPN, it's not really going to work for you, you, it's still going to give you this message. And some websites kind of tell you that, hey, you're using a VPN, go ahead and disconnect that. And then you can use our service. But either way, you know, you're just not going to work if you're outside the appropriate region. So, you know, this is why I'm gonna be using Express VPN, which is a VPN that is very well known for being able to kind of rip through or just not really care about any of these geo-restrictions or anti VPN traffic blocks. So what I would recommend is, of course, now use the lightweight UDP protocol, which you can use automatically for sure. But lower up is what I'd recommend for just, you know, consistency. Of course, we're looking for a United States server here, since this is a US kind of service. So yeah, we're going to find that under America's Of course, I already have the San Francisco server already here. So I'm just going to turn it on. And as soon as, as soon as it's on, I'm going to wait just a couple more seconds for the network to come back in to just to kick back in. And I'm just gonna hit refresh.
