Israel's Disengagement from Gaza | History of Israel Explained | Unpacked
This week, we’re journeying to the Gaza Strip, a 25-mile long strip of land on Israel’s southern border. Although Israel pulled out of Gaza almost 15 years ago, many people believe it still controls this small piece of land.
Although some 8,800 Jews once lived in Gush Katif in the south of Gaza, Israeli life there ended there in 2005. During a long, hot summer, the country came to terms with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s unilateral decision to withdraw 100% of Israeli military forces and civilians from the territory.
So, why is Israel still embroiled with this tiny patch of land that it handed over a decade-and-a-half ago?
How did the withdrawal take place?
What has taken place since?
And has the gamble to pull out of Gaza paid off?

Fighting between Israel and Hamas entered a fourth day that saw the most intense hostilities in years. In an escalation of the conflict, Israeli ground forces moved in along the border area and carried out air strikes on Hamas-run Gaza on May 14, 2021, as Palestinian militants continued to fire rockets from Gaza. Israel later clarified that despite the ground offensive, Israeli troops had not entered Gaza. Clashes also broke out between Jewish and Arab Israelis in several ethnically mixed cities, with reports of assaults and synagogues and cars being set on fire.

Gaza Post Crisis
In Gaza Strip, the high density of population, coupled with the impossibility of constructing new houses, due to the blockade, has led to a major deficit in housing availability that was severely compounded by the destruction of more than 11,500 private houses and residential buildings during Cast Lead Operation. UNDP intervention in this case, aims at promoting recovery and restoration of the livelihood of affected Palestinian families in the Gaza Strip by providing quick cash assistance: for households totally destroyed up to USD 5000, and from USD 1000 up to USD 3000 for partially destroyed.

There are few signs of violence abating, more than a week since fighting broke out between the Israeli army and Palestinian militant groups, despite international calls for an end to the conflict. In what has been some of the fiercest hostilities seen in the region for years, Israeli air strikes on May 15, 2021, levelled a building that wiped out nearly the entire family of Mohammad al-Hadidi. His five-month-old son was the sole survivor in the building, but his wife and four other sons died in the attack in Al-Shati, also known as Beach camp, a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Gaza.
