Stormfly takes a bath nearly every day to keep her feathers in tip-top shape. Taking care of feathers is a huge job, most birds spend almost 10% of their day maintaining them.

🎉THANK YOU! Thank you everyone who backed our project, shared it, offered kind words & also tolerated two weeks of constant Kickstarter chatter. It means more than I can say, to me & for the work we're doing. Now back to our regular bird posts, please enjoy this very tall emu

Thank you so much to the folks who donated the cardboard carriers (I go through a lot) and the handling gloves from our Amazon wishlist! The Owl Xpress is now on its way to the UMN Raptor Center so the owl can get radiographs and a thorough vet check after her car collision.

This beautiful young barred owl just arrived after a collision with a car. It's doing much better after some supportive care, hopefully it will be able to get back to its wild life soon. A woodpecker who unfortunately struck a window is on its way now, busy day today!

It's that time of year again when we're extracting and bottling honey from our apiary, so poor Sev the vulture has lost his indoor privileges for awhile (he wants to be in the middle of it and we promise 100% vulture-free honey). Inspector Stormfly is on the job in his place.

I am really proud of our Egyptian vulture pin design this year; it was the design that gave us the most difficulty to get right but I'm thrilled with the end result. They're unique, stunning birds and I hope we did them justice!

The reality of wildlife rehab: weeks of trenching more than 100ft of lines down 6-9ft to run water pipe to the new buildings since we couldn't get contractors. My husband and Tiger deserve every volunteer award ever for this monumental work. Water may be connected tomorrow!!

Here's a quick video where I show some of the imping process. Without full wing and tail feathers it's very hard for a bird to fly well enough to hunt or escape predators. Repair can help a bird get back to the wild much quicker.

In the case that just a few feathers are damaged, we can use a falconry technique called 'imping' to replace damaged feathers by cutting off part of the feather (it doesnt hurt the bird, it's like cutting hair) and glue a new one in, which will then molt and be replaced as normal
