Most of those who follow the tech-blog-o-sphere* will be aware of the recent financial news regarding Automattic, the company that more or less stewards bbPress’ production.
For the rest of you here are some links that cover the story.
Some people may be wondering what this news means for bbPress. Well, for a start this funding has already impacted on the project as it made my full-time employment with Automattic possible three months ago when the arrangement was in it’s early stages. But more importantly it now allows Automattic to have the financial security to back bbPress into the foreseeable future.
We have some awesome things in the pipe including improvements to the bbPress core, the bbpress.org website and, in the not too distant future, the launch of a hosted community service by Automattic based on bbPress.
In the meantime, we will be ramping up the pace of development and attempting to bring out some of the new features that have been on the “to-do” list for far too long. Features which we hope will help to differentiate bbPress from the crowd and make it a truly useful tool for building online communities.

Congrats, this is very nice news!
This is really exciting Sam and I am glad to be a part of this as it moves forward into the future 🙂

*It is now 🙂
Okay, you’ve got me as excited as a seven-year-old on December 24th! Please keep us informed, even if it’s just tempting little teasers.
So when are we going to be seeing bbmu then 🙂
Great news indeed, I think bbPress needs the development rate push, I get the impression that people thought it was stagnating.
I guess the question has to be asked: Nobody makes an investment of this nature without their being a business plan in place that shows a road to profitability. What is bbpress doing for actual income?
Awesome. It good to have a great product become better. In the part that I’ve used bbpress for… it was great. Now with some more cash lying around… the updated product should be great!

Great…
Hi – Great news. I think I read that Matt believes that Bulletin Boards haven’t kept up with the times. I agree. I think you have a big opportunity now to shoot ahead of the pack and integrate some new social media functionality into the mix for a Web2.0 (and beyond) BB system.
Best of luck and success –
Scott
I read about this earlier, about the round B financing. ROCK ON, DUDES! I am also excited about where this will lead the company. If you have any ipo news, please let me know *reaching for wallet*.
I’ve been using WordPress for about a year now, and on top of discovering my own abilities with PHP and CSS, I’m honored to say that the simplicity of the Open Source software developed here (in it’s simple, elegant style) has made this possible for me.
I’ve always been a graphics-oriented HTML kind of guy… Yet, because of the efforts of the AWESOME folks at WordPress, I’m starting to understand the footer tag: “CODE IS POETRY!” Automattic == supercool.

Yes, I wish you guys all he best for BB press. Make it as good or better than WordPress!
cool, this after using bbpress for a month!
I hope all the modifications I did the last weeks to make this forum soft behave like a forum are not just wasting time ðŸ™
I was wondering whether I made a wrong choice or not about bbpress because of some fetaure-lack state of bbpress 0.8.x. I regularly check bbpress.org and this is really good news for our community. I use wordpress for small projects as a cms. And I am going to use bbpress for a new part of our website (not for a forum).
I hope you will publish bbpress 1.0 very soon.
Best regards.
Yaaaay!
RawAlex: I guess bbPress will follow the same business model as wordpress.com
As somebody who used phpBB for a while, there’s a real need for some innovation here. I’m really interested in seeing what happens.
Where is the SVN repository, so I can have a look? Please.
Found it sorry: http://svn.automattic.com/bbpress/trunk/
Does this mean we’ll see a more intricate integration with wordpress?
I’m kinda waiting for a more official way of integrating forums with my wordpress commenters.
Thus far the only guide i’ve been able to find is a beta guide of using Vanilla with wordpress…and its not even a full guide at that.
[…] The future for bbPress is looking up. I trust Matt and co. will continue building upon the software with an extra $29.5 million laying around. […]

Great to read 🙂

Really great news !
What I’d like to see in the future as I’m sure would others is WordBB :-p, a pre-integrated WordPress/bbPress installer. Perhaps with this funding it could become a reality.
Just give bbPress per-user private forum support (like every other message board software on the planet :P) and I’ll be happy
Good luck with the hosted forums idea.
