Colourgrade (LP)

Tirzah

British cult favorite Tirzah returns with Colourgrade , the genre-defying followup to her acclaimed 2018 debut, Devotion . The album features contributions from Tirzah’s longtime friend Mica Levi and the brilliant Coby Sey. Written in the period after the birth of her first child, right before the birth of her second, the album feels fresh, poignant, and exploratory. The vibe moves from alt-R&B to indie to pop to trip-hop, each twist and turn a pleasant surprise. Eclectic, eccentric, and lovely.

Springtime In New York: The Bootleg Series Vol. 16 (1980-1985) (CD)

Bob Dylan

Springtime In New York: The Bootleg Series Vol. 16 (1980-1985) is a treasure trove for Bob Dylan fans. The collection includes 54 previously unreleased outtakes, alternate takes, rehearsal recordings, live performances and other curios drawn from the period in which Dylan recorded the albums Shot Of Love, Infidels , and Empire Burlesque . As a chronology of an artistic journey, this latest entry in the Bootleg Series is top-notch; the alternate takes available here differ markedly from those released on earlier Series compilations, charting the creative paths Dylan chose to traverse and serving up intriguing new angles to previously heard tracks. The album is certainly a joy for completists, but it's not just for completists either. Dylan fans of all levels will find much to enjoy in these heartfelt, authentic, brilliant compositions.

Under The Weather (CD)

HOMESHAKE

It's a testament to the power of HOMESHAKE's songwriting skills that his latest album, Under the Weather , derives such magnetic beauty from the pain that inspired it. At the time of the album's conception, musician and singer-songwriter Peter Sagar was dealing with a deep depression, channeling his emotions into this heartfelt, hazy collection of songs. That undercurrent of sadness connects immediately with the listener; yet, in spite of the album's melancholy subtext, there's a fragile loveliness, even a dreaminess to the tracks. Maybe that's transcendence. Sagar is certainly able to find the grace hidden inside the darkness, which makes Under the Weather a perfect companion for our strange days.

Horizons/East (CD)

Thrice

Thrice’s Horizons/East opens on an evocative, stirring note (“The Color of the Sky”) and does not let up over the course of this ten impressive tracks. The band moves from moody synths to classic alt-rock intensity to rough-and-tumble post-hardcore heaviness as the album progresses. Intensity is the one constant, bubbling up beneath the melodies, inherent in the growling vocals of frontman Dustin Kensrue. It’s a powerful listening experience filled with moments of brutal beauty and genre-defying songwriting. Essential listening.

9 (CD)

Pond

Australian psych rockers Pond sound better than ever on their ninth studio album, appropriately titled 9 . The band dove into their writing/recording sessions in search of a new energy; eschewing their usual strict music making routines, they recorded improvisations and built the songs that would become 9 from these very loose uninhabited jams. Ironically, the tracks sound remarkably intense, tightly-crafted, and ultra intriguing. It’s a good look for the always reliable Pond. Frontman Nick Allbrook has said that much of the lyrical focus on the album is on those “small moments or small things when you zoom real close up and they reveal something deeper.” Maybe that’s a good metaphor for this latest release, too. Crafted from small, almost throw-away moments, the band has built a truly meaningful living and breathing collection of songs.

Symphony Hall Concert (CD)

Erroll Garner

In honor of the 100th anniversary of Erroll Garner’s birth, the Erroll Garner Project and Mack Avenue present a previously unreleased live recording of his 1959 concert at Boston’s Symphony Hall. The sold-out concert featured the virtuoso jazz pianist in full swing with Eddie Calhoun on bass and Kelly Martin on drums and a set that includes music from Other Voices (1957) and Erroll Garner Plays Gershwin & Kern (1976), as well as his beloved ballad “Misty.” It’s a wonderful way to celebrate a jazz great at the height of his talents.

Marching In Time (CD)

Tremonti

Guitar World 's three-time Guitarist of the Year and newly-crowned Guitarist of the Decade Mark Tremonti returns with Marching in Time , a cinematic, emotional journey into the dark heart of anthemic metal. The Alter Bridge and Creed musician knows how to deliver a searing riff and tightly-wound melody, and there’s plenty of that on display here. His lyrics are more resonant and penetrating than ever, perhaps as a result of his experience preparing for fatherhood in the midst of a global pandemic. (Tremonti takes a deep look at that period and its lingering effects on the sweeping title track.) Loud, uncompromising, and at times brutally beautiful, Marching in Time delivers.

The Daptone Super Soul Revue Live! At the Apollo [Translucent Tie-Dye Teal Vinyl] (LP)

Various Artists

Few recordings really capture the magic of the live experience. The applause sounds like it was pulled from a library of stock sounds, the energy between audience and performer feels depleted, if the listener even thinks of it all. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s The Daptone Super Soul Revue Live! At the Apollo . (You know if anyone was gonna do it right, it was gonna be Daptone!) Featuring dynamic, booty-shaking, foot-stomping performances from legendary Daptone artists like Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires, Antibalas, The Budos Band, The Sugarman 3, and so many more, the album was recorded over three nights in 2014 in front of a sold out crowd at The World Famous Theater in Harlem, NY. High-energy emcee Binky Griptite anchors the proceedings, bringing the fervor and the fever pitch of those nights into your very own home. Turn it up loud and get down! This is what live recordings are meant to sound like.

Local Valley (CD)

José González

José González's Local Valley feels, at once, familiar and timeless, fresh and unexpected. The Swedish singer-songwriter's warm, immersive vocals and distinctive, down-home guitar make the album feel like a long-time friend, one that you'll enjoy for many spins to come. The melodies are hypnotic and vulnerable ("El Invento," "Visions"), upbeat and joyful ("Head On," "Swing"). It's an eclectic listening experience that showcases Gonzalez at his inventive best. Psychedelia meets tropicalia meets folk-infused indie in one cohesive, cozy album.

Going Going Gone (CD)

Mild High Club

Mild High Club’s Going Going Gone is a trip, and one you’ll be glad to take. Fusing elements of psychedelia with indie, AM Gold, and Brazilian music, it’s one of the most eclectic, exploratory albums of the year. As the songs shift through explorations of paranoia, faith, and societal decay, the melodies seem to grow more rousing, offbeat, and ebullient. Each tells its own story, with its own set of melodic rules and bouts of rule-breaking. Taken together, the songs on Going Going Gone create a world all their own, one that’s dazzling and exciting in spite of the band’s often very dark (if appropriate) thematic occupations.

How The Garden Grows (CD)

YVETTE

YVETTE's How The Garden Grows is one of the most fascinating albums of the fall. The post-industrial/neo-no wave project of NYC duo Noah Kardos-Fein and Rick Daniel, YVETTE recorded the album in 2016 when the pair had a break from sharing stages with the likes of Lydia Lunch, Liars, Metz, and Thurston Moore, and is now—after a five-year delay—getting released via Western Vinyl. Once you hear the album, however, the long wait for this release is all just backstory. The music itself eclipses the tale, sounding jittery, urgent and ominous. In many ways, it's an ideal soundtrack for 2021, and well worth the wait.

Let It Be [Special Edition] (CD)

The Beatles

Hot on the heels of the remixed, expanded anniversary editions of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band , The White Album , and Abbey Road (2017-2019) comes a very special newly mixed version of The Beatles classic Let It Be . With producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell at the helm, this new version of the beloved album features a new stereo mix based on Phil Spector’s original “reproduced for disc” version. The mix comes directly from the original session as well as eight-track tapes from the band’s rooftop recording studio concert on January 30, 1969. These reissues aren’t just for collectors, however—they sound so good that they breathe new life into a much-loved classic album. Headphones on for this one.
