The Jones Girls and Sharon Redd (who are both giving bass and guitar) are followed up with the UK group Savanna, which features Leroy Osbourne on lead vocals (remember Sade’s “Nothing Can Come Between Us”?) and Ca$hflow from Atlanta, produced by Larry Blackmon of Cameo. Loose Ends’ slept on track “Ooh Your Make Me Feel” is followed by the hit from The Sylvers “We Can Make It If We Try” which was released in 1973.

Pieces Of A Dream’s instrumental “Mt. Airy Groove” (released in 1982) is followed by Rockie Robbins “Time To Think” (released in 1981). I would be remiss if I didn’t include some Stevie goodness with “That Girl” (released in 1982) from “The Original Musiquarium.”
Fast forward 4 years with the group from Detroit, RJ’s Latest Arrival with “Heaven In Your Arms” (1986) is followed up by Vaneese Thomas’ slept-on track “Love In Your Eyes” (more bass). I close it out with 3 classics from another one from the Jones Girls (couldn’t resist putting two tracks on by them thanks to TV One’s “Unsung”), Jean Carne, and The O’Jays. Hope you enjoy.

D-Train was an easy track to start out with thanks to Amanda, where I saw some of the lyrics of when I went to wish her a Happy Birthday. (Thank you Amanda!) 9.9 was an obvious choice, since I needed a good segue into the little-known track from the Mac Band which is similar to hits from L.A. & Babyface. I had to follow up that with a track which was written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who also played on the track along with Monte Moir. The track “When You’re Far Away” was produced by no other than Leon Sylvers III.

The Five Star track, “Let Me Be The One” was indeed produced by Nick Martinelli, but if it sounds a bit like Loose Ends, that is because it was written by the trio, who also played all of the instruments, except the saxophone, which was played by – you guessed it – Grover Washington, Jr. The two great tracks from The Whispers and GQ are followe by Mtume’s sublime “Love Lock.” Darryl Hall follows that track with “I’m In A Philly Mood” with help from The Family Stand (i’m sure you can hear Sandra St. Victor singing background vocals.

Rahsaan Patterson’s “Come Over” is one of my favorite love songs of all time. The next two tracks are what I like to call the “call and answer” tracks, The first is from Atlantic Starr with a has an interpolated by Erykah Badu from RC & The Gritz track “Leave Me Alone,” which is entitled “Don’t Take Me For Granted” (the call). This is followed by my personal favorite slow jam from Lo-Key “Don’t You Know By Now” (the answer). This compilation ends with Loose Ends’ title track of their third US album, THe Real Chuckeeboo, which is a blend of 3 tracks, the middle one being one you should be familiar with, “Mr. Bachelor”.  Shoutouts to G-Dub, DJ Diva, and TGrundy.  Hope you enjoy.

It’s been a while, but there is still good music out there that needs to be represented. I presented the first tack, The Beauty Of Life, because it is one that has stayed in rotation and is a great track from Hide & Seek, a compilation by Foreign Exchange. The UK group Yakul is represented here, as is IS’s Zilo, from the album Gorgeous. Master Soul Boy’s track Inside, was put in my ears by Todd Big La Kelley, the Liana track was placed in my ear by Jeff, and the Tasha track was sent to me by J Brotherlove. Benny Sings and Jonti accompanied with Steve Lacy is followed up by the UK rapper Ty with Speech from the group Arrested Development. Ty passed on 7 May 2020, the same day as Andre Harrell. THat was a tragic day in soul and hip hop music, and he will be missed.

I had to follow up Ty wit a track from Kindness featuring Bahamadia, who I can never get enough of. This is followed up by the thoughtful track from Terrace and the crew, and great track from the Free Nationals with a little help from Benny Sings. I finish it off with BOSCO (very underrated), and Alex Isley. Thank you fo allowing me to wet my feet. So nice, I had to do it twice. For this one, I try to ensure that the I cover all of the bases, and comcemtrate on tracks that have special meanings to some of the peoeple that I know who were serious fans of Uptown.

I believe I could have used Father MC’s “Lisa Baby”, but I didn’t have enough room, and I had to drop the classic “I’ll Do For U” with Mary J. Blige. Heavy D and The Boyz’ “More Bounce” was a request from Theresa which I had never listened to. It’s a great track and compliments the tracks around it well, case in point Finesse and Synquis’ “Soul Sista” which keeps the momentum going.

I always enjoy instrumentls, and “Teddys Jam 2” is classic. It’s followed by what I onsider two of the most forgotten hip hop/new jack swing track, “Whee Were You” and “I’ll Be There” which Special thanks to Sharon and Grroove who taught me about Groove B Chill. THe last tracks slow ou down a but and end with Jodeci’s rendition of the Stevie Wonder classic, “Lately”.

Andre Harrell, the head of Uptown Records, is gone but definitely not forgotten. In his stead, he helped launch the careers of Guy, Mary J. Blige, Heavy D and The Boyz, amd Jodeci. However, these tracks hold a significance. If you can remember at least half of these tracks, then I am sure you can remember where you were when these tracks came out. FOr myself, I can remember being in Lincoln, Nebraska on a project, listening to Mary J. Blige’s “What’s THe 411” and hearing Love No Limit for the first time, causing me to walk around a neighborhood several times listening to track several times. And yes, there are definitely more examples.

I am very grateful for Theresa, T Grundy, Garfield, Eric, Jeffrey, and the onle and only Gene “Groove” Allen. Your feedback is always encouraged. Take it light.

This  has been on the drawing board for almost 6 months. I am glad  that it is now seeing the light of day.  We start off with the wonderful track Make You Smile which  captivated me and never let go.  Bluey Maunick, the leader of Incognito, produced this track, and Brenda’s bpove nails it.  This rolls right into Basia, with the classic Drunk On Love. Dilouya teams up with Omar, who (as usual)  nails it.  Myele then teams up with Rachel Fraser, whom fans of Sorceress formerly known as Funkommunnity, should recognize. The result between the two is the thumping On The Move.

And then it happens.  The Brand New Heavies  pull out the killer track Heat,  one of the great tracks from their album TBNH.   Mark Rae, one half f of the duo Rae an Christian follows up quite nicely with Without You, accented wh the vocals from Veba.  A great instrumental from Pobohands follows sliding right into Common’s My Fancy Free Future which is one of my favorites.   Omar with help from Terri Walker takes the forefront with  Pass It On,   allowing Swing Out Sister and Moonchild to slide right  in and bring their demands to the forefront, but do it so calmly you don’t realize you’re being pimp-slapped by their sweetness.

DJ Simon S  teams up with Nathan Thomas to give you the very nice mellow track Sunblind.  That track brings you to the crazy but talented Tyler The Creator with a little help from Roy Ayers, Syd (from Th Internet), and Kali Uschii with Fly Your Wings, one which is still on repeat with a crazy video to compliment it.    Flying Lotus hooks up with Thundercat for the nice head nodder about life called The Climb.  This is followed by another feel-good track from Kate Rogers entitled Fine,  which I find myself  playing repeatedly also.

N’Dea’s classic, classic Bring It On is followed by Sy Smith and my favorite track from her last album entitled  Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete.    The track that wrps up the podcast is Bah Samba with the amazing vocals of Alice Russell  with And It’s Beautiful should make you feel good after you hear it.

I should be calling this the VT mix, since one of the longest running fans of old school Wednesday podcasts, VT,had a birthday a couple of months ago. THe death of Aretha, as well aslife in general, made it more challenging to get it out of the door. I am finally, funally satisfied (what can I say I am mmy own worst critic!)

Cherrelle and THe System were the easiest to pull out (I’m still amazed at how that video looked when I first heard it Still waiting for the breakdancing King Kong to appear in the neighborhood.) Prince and Jesse following them was easy too.

And then I got into that music rut which doesn’t happen very ofteh but this time that and the desth of Aretha followed suit. it took me a while to locate some gems. “What Does It Take” is one of a very select few remakes tht are vclassics, and this makes it my favorite Kenny G cut, and John Elias a force to be reckoned with.

I was listening to a podcast featuring Jeffrey Osborne last week and as the people interviewing him were talking abiout their fsvorite cuts from him, I realized that my favorite track was the one he mentoned Plane Love. The classc Fatback Band cut was followed by an instrumental from THe Brothers Joihnson, which provides as a segue into the submime Raydio cut. If you listen to the lyrics, you’ll you see this smooth cut is a cold reality0check. Whew!

Kashif’s nice track is followed by the long forgotten track from Lee Ritenour, which was played on the R&B stations in the south in the early 80s.The Family blends perfectly into Sade, which slides right into DeBarge, ConFunkShun, The Gap Band, and Loose Ends. Hope you enjoy ‘

I started on  this in February and meant to get it done by St. Patrick’s Day, but time wasn’t on my side.  When I finally got a chance to do this thigh, there were so many thoughts in my head that it took a while to get it perfected the way I wanted to; however, because of all that, I believe I have  enough tracks for two more, so  expect a couple more of them soon.

Loose Ends’ Hanging On A String is one of my favorite  tracks of all time, so I had t to  include it.  In fact, this track was released on the US side 33 years ago.  If  that is not considered old-school, then I don;t know what it is.  Welcome To The Club  by Blue Magic was inspired by the Unsung episode about the band.  I had just happened top hear  this version on one of the CDs I purchased which had a  lot of great tracks, this included.

I’m sure that the old school aficionados will love George Duke and Slave, in addition to Donna McGhee, which is a nice mellow groove with some very direct lyrics.   The instrumental Dreaming has an incredible bass line which makes me smile each time I listen to it, and the Joyce Sims track is a smooth track to end with, since it never gets old.   I could go on and on about the other tracks, but I am sure most will agree that this is a nice summertime mix to groove.

I coould talk about this at length, but for this one, I’m going to keep it as simple as possible. I had a rule of 80 minutes maximum for a podcast (the length of a CD) but for this one, I was actually forced to cull it down from nearly 2 hours, and as a result it is just above 80 minues, and you won’t see that happen very often.

For the sake of simplicity, I’ll touch on a few key elements. The track from Blue Zone was one of the first tracks that featured Lisa Stsansfield and was released before Affection, her first album. If you are unfamiliar with Wally Badarou, he is one of the principal songwriters and producers of Level 42 and is considered the hidden fifth member. This track came from his first album which was released in 1979, Back to Scales Tonight. Soul The Family Sensation’s vocalist is Jhelisa, who you know for the track Friendly Pressure and one of my favorite albums, Galactica Rush. Mica’s track, which was slept on, from her first album, So Good, and was co-written by her. Her friend Will Downing is on vocals as well.

There are quite a bit of things going on in this mix, as I tried to put a little bit of everything  that was requested and talked about, while also paying homage to those who have passed/ Even though I usually try to find a dance hit to start off the mix with, after frustration, I just let the music play until I finally heard Alex’s voice and that’s what  made me start out with To Make You Love Me.    Curtis and Evelyn were easy choices, although I  ultimately was persuaded by  a group of folks for “I’m In Love” as the third track.

The Norman and Patti energetic tracks give way to Mutual Attraction, with Nick’s spin on it, which I played three times in a row to take it all in which is why it is the title track.   My fave track from Howard Jones brightened up my morning on Wednesday, so Level 42 was an obvious choice to follow it.  “Call Me Tonight” is one of my favorite instrumentals of all time and  continues the homage to Kashif.   The  jam from The System is followed up  with a Melissa/Peabo duet, given the green light by Nikki bka Infinite Ink.   Angela is followed by Cameo’s track, given a huge  thumbs up by DJ Vinnie V and AR, among others.  One Way;s timeless track was played quite a few times, and one of my all time faves from Steely Dan caps this mix, and you can rest assured that there will be others presented this year with additional podcasts.

This took some time to come  out because I am starting to get more particular about how I want this to sound, but I finally got it out.  Around my birthday, I wanted to go a little more mellow than usual (I suppose we can attribute  that to age, right?)  Most should be familiar to most with the exception of Nicci.  I had to put Steely Dan in because I had been  wanting to do that for the longest, and Genie was a perfect succession to Human, since it had that Jan and Lewis feel to it as well.
