Police should evoke trust, not fear

For us in India, it’s hard to believe policemen can be liked. Yet with a little effort things can change. a former cop told me the first step is to isolate the police from political interference

How I got a chance to preside over UNGA

Libyan leader Colonel Muammar al-Qadhafi spoke for 96 minutes during the General Debate of the 64th UNGA on September 23. This took its toll on UNGA’s schedule for the day. And, the penny with this realisation dropped for me when I was approached later in the day by a UN official and requested to preside over UNGA from 6 pm onward.
This Covid-19-driven remote UNGA denies these leaders the good feeling and theatrics of speaking from the UN’s pulpit; it further robs them of the opportunity of interacting with fellow leaders from other parts of the globe.(SHUTTERSTOCK)

The issues that matter to Indian-Americans

Its latest poll tells a most consequential story, but one that has received little attention: Indian-Americans don’t actually care much about US policy for South Asia.

Lessons from the Black Death in the time of Covid-19, writes Swapan Dasgupta

The first six months of the Covid-19 pandemic have punctured the 21st-century claim of being driven by the imperatives of science
Even something as basic and innocuous as the wearing of masks in public places has witnessed strong differences of opinion. Initially, even the medical fraternity believed that masks offered no additional benefits but since then this has changed with the advance of the virus(REUTERS)

How the Delhi riots probe polarised society | Analysis

The police investigation has polarised the public. While a section finds the police biased for targeting the anti-CAA protesters, the other justifies the police action, clamouring for stringent legal action against the accused in the UAPA charge-sheet. The truth lies somewhere in between
It was a mammoth exercise to conduct a probe in the riots which claimed 53 lives and injured 583 others(Raj K Raj/HT PHOTO)

Farm bills are welcome, but farmers need a rights-based protection law | Analysis

A base price will ensure a fair price for every farmer, removing MSP limitations, which cover only 22 crops. Such a mechanism would help both farmers and private buyers as it will bring about transparency and accountability in the farm trade
There should be a base price for all agriculture and horticulture crops (a long-standing demand of farmers) below which the produce cannot be sold(HT PHOTO)

The Taste with Vir | Supreme Court vs Sudarshan TV: Free speech isn’t setting fire to a communally complex nation

Vir Sanghvi writes, “The government has finally taken a stand. In what may be a disappointment to those of its supporters who were sympathetic to Sudarshan TV’s case, the government went to the Supreme Court on Wednesday and said what should have been obvious to anyone who is familiar with the law.”

BJP’s one market for farmers is a myth | Opinion

Only multiple markets and competitive ecosystems will fetch them best prices for their produce
A key question that has not been answered by the government is this: If the government was indeed keen on retaining the MSP system and assuring MSP to the farmers, why is it not stated explicitly in the new laws.(Sanchit Khanna/HT PHOTO)

Devise a new labour law regime for gig economy workers

Carefully-drafted laws that recognise the reality of platform work, and guarantee to platform workers both procedural rights (such as collective bargaining) and substantive rights (such as minimum wages and safe working conditions) are the only solution to this problem.

Farm bills, sifting the grain from the chaff

TRUTH VS HYPE Though the government maintains that the MSP regime would remain intact, it’s clear that on account of the tax differential between the mandis and new agri-trade areas, mandis will wither away in a short period.
Most farmer organisations, barring a handful owing allegiance to the RSS and BJP, have hit the streets in protest against the bills. Lathicharge and use of force on a peaceful assembly of farmers at Pipli near Kurukshetra recently (in pic) was saddening.(HT file photo)

Punjab sows but will not reap

GUEST COLUMN Saying that the state can no longer impose a market fee on trade conducted in its own physical space is nothing short of a territorial invasion through legislative action. A veritable Trojan Act.
The soul of India lives in her villages, as was declared by the Mahatma. So, when laws are passed affecting the underlying substratum of agrarian life, there is bound to be turmoil. While legally permissible, the fact that the government first tried to sneak in these laws through ordinances as opposed to a properly debated legislation weakened confidence in them.(HT file photo)
