In an unorthodox fusion of Northern Renaissance style painting and surrealism, Georges Mazilu navigates memories of his soviet upbringing. At the core of Mazilu’s acrylic paintings and drawings are masterfully rendered, stylized figures in shadowy and ambiguous settings. Although these figures have human heads that convey something between blankness and contemplation, their anatomical proportions are distorted, sometimes suggesting composites of other creatures. The more eccentric touches of Northern Renaissance art take on an absurd dimension that Mazilu sees as a reflection of the political climate in which he was raised.
