Peter Marshall (born 23 August 1946) is an English philosopher, historian, biographer, travel writer and poet. He has written fifteen books which are being translated into fourteen different languages. He wrote, presented and partly filmed the 6-part HTV series 'Voyage Around Africa', first shown in 1994. He also wrote and presented the two-part series 'Celtic Gold: A Voyage around Ireland' for BBC Radio Wales in 1995, which later became a book.
Born in Bognor Regis, England, Marshall became a boarder at Steyning Grammar School in the Sussex Downs. He then sailed around the world as a purser cadet in the Merchant Navy before teaching English in Senegal, West Africa. He returned to England to take a Bachelor of Arts in English, French and Spanish from the University of London and an Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in the History of Ideas from the University of Sussex. As a part-time tutor, he taught in the Extra-Mural departments of the University of London and the University of Wales, the Open University, and the Brighton and Chelsea schools of art.
Peter Marshall (May 27, 1902 – January 26, 1949) was a Scots-American preacher, pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC and twice appointed as Chaplain of the United States Senate.
He is remembered popularly from the success of A Man Called Peter (1951), a biography of him written by his widow, Catherine Marshall, and the 1955 film adaptation of the same name, which was nominated for an Academy Award for its cinematography.
Born in Coatbridge (North Lanarkshire), Scotland, Marshall heard a strong calling to the ministry at a young age. Despite having no money, he emigrated to New York in 1927 when he was 24. He graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1931.
He was called as the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, a small, rural church in Covington, Georgia. After a brief pastorate, Marshall accepted a call to Atlanta's Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1933.
In Atlanta, Marshall met his future wife, Catherine Wood, then a student at Agnes Scott College. They married in 1936 and had one son, Peter John Marshall (January 21, 1940 – September 8, 2010).
Peter Marshall (born 12 May 1971 in Nottingham, United Kingdom) is a former professional squash player from England.
With his unique double-handed playing style, Marshall finished runner-up to the great Pakistani player Jansher Khan at the World Open in 1994 and the British Open in 1995. When he reached the World No. 2 ranking behind Jansher in November 1994, many observers felt he seemed a strong candidate to displace the aging Pakistani champion as World No. 1. However, in 1995, Marshall was afflicted with glandular fever, the effects of which meant he was unable to play top-level squash for two years.
Marshall returned to the professional tour in 1997, re-claiming his place in the England squad which went on to win the World Team Squash Championships title in Malaysia. He broke back into the world's top-10 in 1999, and won his third British National Championship title in February 2000. He was protecting a remarkable record, having been unbeaten in that event since December 1989.
Peter Jeffrey Marshall (born March 9, 1982) is an American competition swimmer who specializes in the backstroke. He is a former world record holder in the 50-meter backstroke (short course) and the 100-meter backstroke (short course).
He has won a total of fourteen medals in major international competition, ten golds, two silvers, and two bronze spanning the World Championships, the Pan American Games, and the Pan Pacific Championships.
Over his career Peter Marshall held eight World Records (400 Medley Relay 2002, 100 Backstroke 2004, 100 Backstroke 2008, 50 Backstroke 2008, 100 Backstroke 2008, 50 backstroke 2009, 50 backstroke 2009, 50 backstroke 2009) and won two world titles (400 Medley Relay scm 2002, 50 Backstroke scm 2008). He currently holds the US Open record and NCAA record in the 100m backstroke (short course meters), and was a part of the American team that set the world record in the 400m medley relay (now surpassed). He is a two-time National A team member (2001, 2004), a three-time National B team member (2002, 2005, 2006) and a six-time NCAA All-American. He earned his first national championship in the 100m backstroke in the summer of 2001 in Clovis, California. While at Stanford University, he won three consecutive Individual NCAA Titles in the 100 Backstroke. In 2004 he was named Pac-10 Swimmer of the year for his first individual World Record set at the NCAA Championships in Long Island, New York.
