FOOTBALL | Not normally one for fuss, Tanya Hetherington has certainly had a footy career that is worth making a fuss over. #AFLW: via @GWSGIANTShttps://central.rookieme.com/afl/2022/12/16/no-fuss-defender-has-career-that-would-speak-otherwise/…
Oh my god yes. So much academic writing is a long string of tiny fortresses that requires you to read each sentence multiple times, only to conclude that you must be stupid because you don’t understand it.
one thing I'm trying to get better about from here on out is writing and thinking even less defensively. trying to craft sentences into fortresses is a waste of valuable time and effort. what would you say if you were speaking to someone who's trying to understand you? say that.

"Examining the etymology of care has offered me...real acknowledgment of the difficulty, intellectual complexity, complicated work, and often invisible value of care upon which the fabric of our lives depends, day in and day out. "
"Learning that literary and linguistic traditions link curiosity to care highlighted what had often felt to me like a danger in caring too much."

welcome to Australia, where if you’re accused of sexual assault you’ll walk free, but if you stop traffic for 20 minutes protesting inaction of the most urgent global disaster currently unfolding, you’ll spend nearly a year in prison
These are the people who showed up outside of a drag show in Columbus, Ohio and caused it to be canceled. This is terrorism. Where is the DoJ? This is a clear violation of civil rights by neo-nazi orgs.
"However, there comes a point at which the league will need to show the public that the time for greater professionalism has come"
That point is now.
Great piece
After a 'messy' year, the time has come for the AFL to go all-in on AFLW's future https://abc.net.au/news/2022-11-30/aflw-season-seven-review-analysis-afl-grand-final/101710380…
The Colorado shooter’s dad on finding out his son murdered people: “They started telling me about the incident, a shooting... And then I go on to find out it’s a gay bar. I got scared, ‘Shit, is he gay?’ And he’s not gay, so I said, phew… I am a conservative Republican.” (@CBS8)

Reminded me: son revealed on w/end that his school career adviser told him (&others) that trades were for 'losers', kids who wouldn't finish school. He stopped going to see him, bc he was sick of being told he MUST go to uni. He's now in a trade and absolutely loving it.
Only a lifetime shiny bum could have said this or written it up. An electrician is a "low risk trade" which will surprise anyone familiar with number of fatalities there are involving electricity for a start. And I'm not sure who keen on an unlicensed plumber doing their work.
I don't understand folks' commitment to academia. People will tell you to not be too loud about your needs, endure mistreatment, wait to get involved or be outspoken until you get tenure, etc. This ensures a continuation of the status quo & is so damaging to scholars' wellbeing.
Politicians obsess about the ‘tradie’ vote. They should be more worried about the female aged care worker living in the outer suburbs. Its these women that are carrying baseball bats for both major party leaders. They are driving the growth of the ‘other’ vote.

I spend the morning actually working (ahem) and come back to Twitter and everyone is in mourning. Expecting it to die any minute. I'm ghibberd on Insta if it does.

has been getting a lot of attention, and rightly so. Many telling points.
"Disability can happen to anyone at any time, so having a national, consistent system of support that meets the needs of disabled people is vital."
Because we failed to plan ahead and book stadiums for a grand final we knew was coming, let’s host it somewhere that is incredibly difficult to get to and the local AFLW fan base is no doubt meagre. That will surely help build the game. Eff me, so over this. EVERY. SEASON.
Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns is being considered by the AFL to host the AFLW grand final should the Brisbane Lions qualify.

Listened to this earlier this morning and tbh, we've all been there. Who hasn't wanted to throw shells and silt at an annoying neighbour?
(And do listen, it's great).
Researchers have recorded bad tempered octopuses in Jervis Bay, New South Wales chucking shells and silt at each other.
It's rare for animals to do this and it's the first time this behaviour has been recorded in octopuses.

Elon Answer: "I don't know....we all need to be more hardcore."
