A thread: I can’t stop thinking about Nikole Hannah-Jones’s tenure denial. It appears to show the natural endpoint of politicized college governance at public universities, a topic and I dug into for here:

Felt compelled to defend this stuff because I cut my teeth on it. It's not perfect, or a totalizing model. But more prescient than often credited and still useful.

That the particular set of companies that rules the roost has changed is *predicted* by media concentration critiques, not a strike against their utility! The pieces on the chess board are (somewhat) different, but the game's rules remain heavily skewed toward private power.

I.E. concentrated power, corrupt and accomodating public policy-making, and systemic drives to put profit ahead of society-making objectives. ALL of this still applies full force.

Provocative as always, 's "cube" of media concentration is better than the old octopus. But he gives critiques of media concentration short shrift! Those critiques were not about companies, they were about structure.

Interesting story about New York City subsidizing local press by requiring 50% of city agency advertising to go to local news. 50% of the federal government’s 5 billion a year in advertising would be enough to cover the payroll of nearly every journalist in America!

starting from the premise that surveillance capitalism is a pleonasm, one of the reasons it has likely become such a popular one is that it implicitly separates out the tech from the social relations, allowing the former to take the blame for the latter.

This is gross. We need federal privacy legislation that prohibits the collection and (mis)use of personal and behavioral information so that it can't be used for this kind of discrimination.

These companies came into existence to spy on Americans in order to facilitate mass-scale, illegal financial racist, ideological and sexual discrimination. They gather data of enormous import and sensitivity - data no one should be gathering, much less retaining and sharing. 34/

👇 FB and the entire surveillance ad sector does the same thing to users via privacy settings: externalize as much risk and cost as possible, keep the profits.

Defining what counts as political is political. Discouraging political speech is political. When people in power draw these definitions and enforce these prohibitions, what they're saying is that their politics are the only ones that count, and they won't tolerate dissent.

Technological interventions don't automate out the frictions of consumption--they just shift the costs on to someone else.
