My new book, CORRUPTIBLE: Who Gets Power & How It Changes Us, is out Nov. 9. It explores the bizarre relationship between humans and power. I found it to be the most fascinating project I've ever worked on - I learned a ton - and you can pre-order it here:

This kind of rhetoric is going to get people killed. Serious political violence in the United States remains likely because of this kind of toxic language, combined with more direct incitement to violence from top Republicans.

Trumpian Republicans are a danger to public health. What else is there to say? Some are literally trying to resurrect diseases that have mostly been wiped out due to miraculous, life-saving vaccines.

This is very, very, very bad. Vaccines are one of the great public health achievements in human history. They have saved literally millions of lives.

Across the globe, pro-democracy dissidents—who dare to criticize despots and dictators—are being hunted down. Some are kidnapped and detained, others are murdered in cold blood. The US and its democratic allies need to do more to fight back. My column:

People often ask me what can be done to combat GOP authoritarianism. The answer is simple: Democrats need to recognize the severity of the threat, stop messing around, and wield the political power voters gave them to shore up democratic institutions with key reforms.

We have to acknowledge a chilling fact: there was a systematic, organized effort at the highest echelons of power in the United States, to overturn a democratic election and let the loser stay in power. That is authoritarianism. We came close. My take on this morning:

So long as people like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger become GOP pariahs, while unhinged authoritarian conspiracists like Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene become breakout stars, the party will continue to lurch toward the authoritarian, extremist right.

Why do these politicians even go on if they’re not going to answer questions? is pressing perfectly, but what kind of answer is “there are a particular set of circumstances that are occurring at this time.” So many words, so little meaning.

Republicans are, quite literally, having someone who has repeatedly promoted white supremacist, anti-Semitic, conspiracy theories—and even promoted the insane notion that school shootings were staged—wear their uniform to represent the party. They could have easily said no.
