Freedom From Religion Foundation Privacy Statement

General Privacy

Foundation bylaws protect confidentiality. The Foundation does not share, trade, sell or otherwise divulge its mailing list. Members' identities are kept in confidence, as are the identities of prospective members who have contacted the Foundation. E-mail addresses and phone numbers are kept for in-house convenience only, for example, if there is a question about a convention registration or book order, or to contact members to notify them about  a state/church violation in their area, or an upcoming FFRF appearance. The Foundation does not collect personal information other than to log how a new member found out at the Foundation so we can test effective outreach. Those who send in Lifetime Memberships are announced in Freethought Today, unless they indicate otherwise. Any letter sent with the Lifetime Membership is published or excerpted in Freethought Today unless the Lifetime Member indicates otherwise. Other donors are not identified. The only exception is the rarest of occasion when a particular donor requests public acknowledgment or identification, for example, after endowing a particular program.

The Foundation uses industry standard security measures to protect the personal data of its members. While such security measures provide reasonable protections against unauthorized access, they provide no guarantee that the personal data will not be compromised.

Website privacy

This Privacy Policy describes the current policies and practices of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (“FFRF”) with regard to Personal Data collected by FFRF through its website, ffrf.org. The term "Personal Data" refers to personally identifiable information about you, such as your full name, birth date, e-mail address or mailing address, phone number and any other information that can be used to identify or contact you. This Privacy Policy is periodically updated. Please check back on a regular basis for any changes.

Personal Data Collected. The only Personal Data FFRF currently collects through the ffrf.org website is the Personal Data that is voluntarily provided to FFRF by users. For example, users may become members of FFRF or make a donation to FFRF through the Website. To do so, a user must enter certain Personal Data.

Non-Personal Data Collected. Other data that does not qualify as Personal Data because it cannot be used to contact or identify Users (“Non-Personal Data”) may also be automatically collected about the user. For example, FFRF may use technology to automatically collect Non-Personal Data about the use of the FFRF Website. This technology is used to track how many users access the FFRF Website, the date and time of their visits, the length of their stays, and which pages they view. FFRF may also use technology to determine which web browsers users use and the address from which they accessed the Website. The information collected using this technology does not identify any user personally and is thus all Non-Personal Data that simply enables FFRF to compile statistics about users and their use of the FFRF Website. FFRF may use this Non-Personal Data and may share it with third parties to improve the content and functionality of the FFRF Website, to better understand our members and prospective members, and to improve our products and services.

Cookies. We may store certain information from your web browser using “cookies.” A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user’s computer tied to information about the user. We may use session-ID cookies to confirm that registered users are logged in. These cookies would terminate once the user closes the web browser. We may also use persistent cookies that store certain Personal Data you already provided to us to make it easier for you to log back in to the FFRF Website. Cookies are used as a convenience feature for the user. You can remove or block cookies using the settings in your browser if you want to disable them.

Use of Personal Data Collected. FFRF uses the Personal Data collected on the FFRF Website to provide users with the requested services or products. If you become a member on the FFRF Website and request additional information on FFRF’s services, for example, FFRF will use your Personal Data to contact you and provide the additional information you requested. FFRF may also use the Personal Data to contact you for a variety of reasons, such as but not limited to notifying you by email about FFRF in the News, Action Alerts, events in your area, or asking for your help with a local issue.

Disclosure of Personal Data Collected. FFRF may disclose Personal Data to third parties under certain limited circumstances. FFRF may disclose Personal Data to third parties if a user has requested that FFRF do so. FFRF may also disclose your email address, at your request, to online services such as an email list site in order to send out group emails, who will use the Personal Data in compliance with this Privacy Policy. If FFRF is acquired by or merged into another entity, or all or a portion of FFRF’s assets are sold or otherwise transferred to another entity, FFRF may disclose Personal Data to that entity.

FFRF may also disclose Personal Data if required or authorized to do so by law.

Security Measures. FFRF uses industry standard security measures to protect your Personal Data. All data collected through end-user input forms, such as the membership sign-up, goes through SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). SSL establishes an encrypted link between the browser and FFRF's web server, rather than sending the data in plain text, so that those data are not vulnerable to being intercepted and used by an attacker. FFRF's website also has a web application firewall, including the administrative portion of the site. This helps prevent the site from being hacked and allowing hackers to gain access to users' personal information. All credit card information is transmitted directly to the payment processor and not stored by FFRF in any way. While FFRF works diligently to protect your data, and while such security measures provide reasonable protections against unauthorized access, they provide no absolute guarantee that your Personal Data will not be compromised, for example, due to an illegal hacking attempt.

Links to Other Website. This Privacy Policy applies only to Personal Data collected on the FFRF Website. The FFRF Website may contain hyperlinks to websites that are not operated by FFRF. These hyperlinks are provided for your reference and convenience only and do not imply any endorsement of the activities or security measures of these off-site websites or any association with their operators. FFRF does not control these websites and is not responsible for their data practices. We urge you to review the privacy policy posted on any website you visit before using the website or providing any Personal Data about yourself.
