In 2018, at 23 years old, Tyler Mitchell made history as the first Black photographer to shoot the cover of American Vogue; his ethereal portrait of Beyoncé appeared atop the publication’s September issue. Throughout his practice—which also includes video and installation—the artist has developed a joyful, utopian perspective on Black life in the U.S. and beyond. Mitchell received his BFA from New York University and gained prominence through commercial and editorial shoots with brands such as Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, and Converse. He also made videos for musical acts including Brockhampton. In 2019, Mitchell’s first solo show debuted at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam and traveled to the International Center for Photography in New York. In 2020, he was chosen as a recipient of the Gordon Parks Fellowship. Mitchell was a member of the The Artsy Vanguard 2018.
