Fino' Chamoru na Inadaggao

One of the many things which looks to keep my October exciting and stressful is that I'm helping to organize a Chamorro Language Forum or Fino' Chamoru na Inadaggao for the Senatorial hopefuls in this year's election on Guam. For those of you who are interested in attending or just submitting a question via email let me know. Also, even though it is completely ready yet, I have started yet another blog, which will have information about the Forums at this address: http://inadaggao.blogspot.com/ . Pagat Protest Today

Image
A pe aceful p rotest and demonstration will be taking place today on the backroad to Anderson near the Pagat trail and cave area. It will happen from 3-7 and is being organized by We Are Guahan. For those of you who don't know why this protest is happening , read the articles below. You can also check out some of the recent posts from Drea on Waiting on Wonderland . The images in this post were painted by her for today's protest. From her post " Liberate Pagat :" Today is the day we celebrate Guam's liberation from the Japanese. As a child, my grandmother would have our mothers get all of us together. We'd go to the parade and watch as all the amazing floats rolled by. The floats are always really amazing. It was so much fun for us kids, but for my Grandma it was deeper than just candy, music, and floats. When she was our age they weren't marching in parades. The marching they did was different. My grandma is gone now, but I still respect today as her

Minagahet Zine Has Moved

Image
Minagahet Zine was started at the community website network Geocities in 2003. The space was free, uploading and downloading was easy to use, and at that time, almost everyone who had a website, but wasn't really good at making websites was on there. Late last year Geocities closed down, leading to the erasing and closing of thousands of peoples' pages. Fortunately I was able to save Minagahet Zine by upgrading its status. Unfortunately, its sister site Kopbla Amerika was not saved, and so I will have to figure out a place to archive and possibly republish the information and articles which could be found there. So after six years of it being located at "http://www.geocities.com/minagahet " you can now visit Minagahet Zine at http://www.minagahetzine.com ! I uploaded the latest issue there last week, but I am slowly updating all its archived pages one by one. Be sure to update your bookmarks! Ya Si Yu'us Ma'ase nu Hamyo ni' sumapopotte ham desde dos

Stories and Song Festival

Image
On November 29th, the Chamorro creative arts group " Ginen I Hila’ I Maga’taotao Siha " wil be hosting a Stories and Songs Festival, which is free and open to the public and will feature Chamorro/Guam storytelling as well as arts and crafts. The group has been organizing a series of very enjoyable presentations recently, even having on before Halloween, where they told ghost stories on the beach at Ipan. I'll be participating in this festival in a number of ways. First off me and i che'lu-hu Kuri will have a table set up in order to display the tools of our grandfather Tun Jack Lujan. My grandpa has been a Chamorro blacksmith for more than 80 years now, and whereas the island once had several dozen tool makers, he is now the only traditional one, or one who comes from a generational legacy. Put i mafana'guen-na i che'lu-hu, esta gaige gi entre i familia-ku kuatro na henerasion herrero. Yesterday I posted some videos of grandpa, Kuri and me working in the sho

Minutemen Founder at UCSD

***Please forward as widely as possible*** Dear UCSD/community member: James Gilchrist, the founder and leader of the Minutemen Project has been invited to speak at UCSD. For those of you that don't know him, Mr. Gilchrist is a high-profile, professional nativist rabble rouser. His job consists of going around the country to spread lies about immigrants and sow fear and hatred towards them. His 'lecture' will be at the UCSD Extension complex, room 129, this Thursday, October 16 at 10am For official event listing, go to: http://extension.ucsd.edu/programs/osher/classes.cfm#series According to the event's description: "Jim will speak about the origins of The Minuteman Project and the uncertain consequences to the United States if immigration policies and laws are not enforced." Please plan to attend the event to speak out against Mr. Gilchrist's presence in our community. We need to loudly and clearly (but peacefully) condemn UCSD's Osher Lifel

Ayuda South End Press!

Image
I came across a post on my friend Maile's blog the maile vine, where she posted a request for support recently made by South End Press . I'm posting the entire request letter below for you to check out and learn more about their situation. This year, the financial woes of Borders bookstores have hit South End Press especially hard. As a way to deal with its own troubles, Borders returned massive amounts of books. This means fewer copies of classics by South End authors like bell hooks, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, and Vandana Shiva on the shelf for book browsers to happen upon. And as Borders returns came at the same time as end-of- semester returns it also means that for several months South End Press will receive no payments from our trade distributor–our main source of income. It hurts living paycheck to paycheck, especially when the checks don’t come. Our worry about how to deal with the immediate cash crisis saps time that we would otherwise spend on publishing and promoti
