For my Marianas Variety column this week I wrote about the current Republican pack of candidates as a colorful collection of barely electable political Pokemon (in homage of Herman Cain's suspension speech). It was a naturally partisan piece, meant to draw attention to how crazy the Republicans are this time around. No doubt some who read it and lean to the right will be offended by it and would love to remind me about all the craziness of the Obama Administration and the terrible things that he has done or that they feel he is doing in the darkest most. Perhaps a few months ago or a few years ago, I would have responded in true partisan form, downplaying all and making excuses for all, except for the racist fantasies which require no response. But watching Obama and his rise and fall as a Democratic figure, leader and symbol, I am fine nowadays with talking about his limitations. Apparently in addition to being attacked on the forums and comments for Guampdn, I was also recently attacked by Fox News commentatory yan hakate na taotao, Glen Beck. I was forwarded this email earlier today, which led me to a link where I watched a video of Beck creating one of his famous Dadaist works of art on a chalkboard, which professed to explain some massive communist or socialist takeover of the United States government. And lo and behold amongst the names of Stalin, Che and Hillary Clinton, there was "Michael Lujan Bevacqua." If you believe in Democratic party values or various progressive causes, then I'm willing to bet that Beck has a space for your on his chalkboard. One thing that I hate about the holidays is that it seems to take over the world, and not just any world or the world in general, but my world. For a couple of weeks there is this surreal feeling of things both rushing forward, as a deadline looms and zooms toward you, and yet also a feeling of timelessness, as everything around you remains in a "mode," in this case, the Christmas mode. The whole world unites in such a way to ensure that you are spending money, that you are buying gifts, that you are getting into the Christmas spirit. When I have other things on my mind, and other things I need to get done, its so dispiriting to constantly be surrounded by this world of Christmas. What irritates me the most is the songs! Once Thanksgiving is over, the Christmas songs start flooding into the airwaves, appearing everywhere you go. After a while it seems like there is a cabal out there of people who are making different versions of 12 days of Christmas just to torture me! But
