Trump Brand Foreign Policy

Image
What a strange world it is, where lately I find myself agreeing regularly with neo-conservatives, hawkish Democrats and former heads of the CIA. One thing that I am struggling to figure out, is why I find Donald Trump's foreign policy positions so repulsive. In a way, his lack of knowledge about the structure of American power in the world, makes it so that he is occasionally or randomly likely to take a position closer to my own. When he discusses withdrawing US support or participation from various alliances, he is talking about reducing America's imperial bootprint over the globe, something that local activists in communities forced to shoulder the burden of America's more than a 100 overseas bases have been demanding for years. Hillary Clinton on the other hand will no doubt maintain, albeit with reasonable imperial justifications, the vast and ridiculously expensive global network of American power. She is after all, the voice that reaffirmed the US commitment to m

Great Debate Moments

Image
My cousin got me a ticket last night to go and watch the Great Debate held at the UOG Field House between the two Republican gubernatorial teams for this year's election, Eddie Calvo and Ray Tenorio and Michael Cruz and Jim Espaldon. I have a headache right now and I have a translation project I need to finish this weekend, so my blog post might not be the best or most well-thought-out tonight, but I just wanted to share some of my thoughts on the event. In the interests of full disclosure, Segundo Maga'lahi Mike Cruz is i gayu-hu. ************************* 1. The bigger and more official-feeling the debate, the more boring it tends to be. I really wish it wasn't so, but last night's event featured the most boring, most stale and therefore mas mata'pang na questions imaginable. They all had the same format, and were as banal as possible, and to make things even worse, were read in a tone which made them even less interesting. "Compare and contrast your stanc

Colin Powell Endorses Obama

Image
Earlier today Colin Powell formally endorsed Senator Barack Obama as a presidential candidate on Meet the Press. I have long been ambivalent with regards to Colin Powell, appreciating the restraint or intelligence and willingness to inject the effect of race into discussions, but also realizing he has long been a key player in the greed welfare succubus known as the military industrial complex, both in the military and private sector. Finally, although many may not remember, although I wasn't born yet, I tend to always think of Colin Powell as the intelligent articulate African American soldier who helped whitewash atrocities committed by American soldiers in Vietnam in the 1960's. With all that being said, I watched the endorsement on Youtube and part of a press conference he held when the news initially broke, and Colin Powell, despite his role in creating and exporting the machinery of American violence and exceptionalism, is a very smart and well-spoken person. His off-
