Donald Trump has a way of bringing diverse groups of people together, for good or for bad reasons. I have felt this quite profoundly in the way that in my own distaste and loathing for Trump, I am now willing to feel ideologically similar to those who are very much defenders of American imperialism, but against the chaos that Trump has brought to American interests and power structures. Mind you, this chaos will have no positive effect on rich and power in the US, but it is affecting the relationship between the governed and those who govern and the US and its allies. On the one hand, I am against Trump intentional or accidental efforts at destabilization, but this is something that I would desire in the context of Guam becoming independent or ceasing to be the tip of America's spear. An interview such as this, from someone who worked within the machinery of American national intelligence, would have likely never appeared on this blog in the past. We shall see how long this game

Guam Mentions are always interesting. The random places that Guam will appear in the speech of military planners, world leaders, comedians and filmmakers is always so intriguing to me. Taking serious these mentions are sort of traces of the structure of American imperialism and colonialism was the main theoretical intervention of my dissertation. Moving away from seeing the random way that Guam gets mentioned sometimes whether it be by Bob Hope or David Letterman as actually possessing serious meaning and truth and not just being an accidental or random mention. For most the flexibility and labiality of meaning attached to Guam, the occasional invisibility that it is shouldered with or assumed is just a misrecognition, is something people say just because they don't know better or something you can just attribute to ignorance. A student asked me today about Edward Snowden. I found that I had only general information about his case and wanted to know more. If my student had asked me about ? I would have proudly shown off my ignorance. But not being able to talk for more than a few minutes about Snowden made me feel embarassed and so I just spent the last hour reading up on his case. I signed a petition on the White House website to pardon him for his role in revealing US surveillance programs.  Today he is on his way to Ecuador, where I just was last month, to request asylum. I heard months ago that Guam had some mentions in Wikileaks, but was never actually able to look into it beyond seeing Guam on the index. Thankfully, the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun has saved me the trouble of searching for Wikileaks for some of the juicier Guam mentions.
