4 June 2018 – On the 9th of April 2018, Astro Labe, an anarchist from Tasmania was given a six month prison sentence for headbutting Tony Abbott, the former Prime Minister of Australia back in September 2017.

In response, some anarchists in Sydney launched a solidarity campaign demanding his release.

Throughout April and May, dozens of solidarity slogans were painted over walls and hung from highway bridges and hundreds of #FreeAstro posters and stickers were spread throughout various suburbs of Sydney.

Fuck Tony Abbott, Astro Labe is a hero.

Sydney: Unauthorised Protest at the Mardi Gras 2018 by Pink Bloc

March 3, 2018 – BACK IN ’78 AND 40 YEARS LATER QUEERS REVOLTED AND QUEERS WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO

WE STAND AGAINST ALL OPPRESSIVE INSTITUTIONS & CORPORATIONS APPROPRIATING AND CAPITALISING ON OUR CONTINUING STRUGGLE

In 1978 queers took to the streets of Darlinghurst to denounce the intersectional oppressions we have faced for centuries. Queers with legitimate political critiques of the homophobic, patriarchal, capitalist status quo used a diversity of protest strategies to defiantly celebrate our identities and genders. Some danced, some kissed, and some carried placards, but most significantly, militant queers, fed up with being criminalized (and subject to various forms of physical, sexual, verbal abuse), literally fought the enemy, the notoriously violent, homophobic Darlinghurst cops, for our right to exist.

Now, 40 years later, queers continue the struggle against ongoing and diverse examples of state sanctioned anti-queer violence, and the capitalist pink-washing of what Mardi Gras represents as a significant moment in queer revolutionary resistance. Remember, ‘they’ only gave us ‘rights’ because we rioted!

40 years ago, staunch queers deliberately took to the streets to assert our rage as causalities of socially sanctioned violence by the mainstream establishment: police, religious bodies, authoritarian state-run institutions (prisons, psych wards etc) and homophobic “upright citizens”.

Today, in tribute to the original political nature of Mardi Gras, we continue to denounce state tyranny in all it’s forms – not just in the name of freedom and liberation for queer communities – but in solidarity with all those who are subject to ongoing criminalization due to their ethnicity/nationality, migration status, non-mainstream lifestyle choices, occupations, gender identities, class, species, and radical political praxis. Untitled

– In the early hours of the 29th of November the electoral offices of Malcolm Turnbull, Tony Abbott and Anthony Albanese were decorated with stencils that said:

Evacuate Manus. Your Inaction Is Blood On Your Hands. Refugees Welcome.

These actions were undertaken in solidarity with the refugee men on Manus, who for years now have fought against the brutal ‘refugee policy’ of the Australian and PNG States.

Sydney: Women held after Manus solidarity protest

3 Nov Sydney students occupied immigration department offices on Friday to protest the federal government’s refusal to bring refugees on Manus Island to Australia.

Three women have been arrested after chaining themselves together as part of protests at the Immigration Department building in Sydney’s CBD.

The protests come amid dire conditions at the recently closed Manus Island detention centre.

The protesters briefly occupied the government department and then stormed the offices of Labor frontbencher Tanya Plibersek demanding authorities bring refugees stuck on Manus Island to Australia.

The Australian-funded detention centre was officially closed on Tuesday but up to 600 refugees and asylum seekers remain on the site without food, water or electricity.

The men are refusing to move to alternative accommodation in the community because of fears they’ll be attacked by locals.

The Sydney protesters were evicted from the immigration offices and three women were arrested after refusing to comply with a move-along direction.

They were taken to a nearby police station and continue to help investigators with inquiries, a NSW Police spokeswoman told AAP.

The remaining protesters marched to Ms Plibersek’s office in nearby Surry Hills.

Alice, a 20-year-old student, told reporters that overseas detention centres had historically been set up by Labor and they’d failed.

“There’s been a bit of scapegoating by Labor in terms of shifting responsibility without having solid policy to actually have targets to close these detention centres,” she said.

“It’s unfair for Labor to pretend they have no hand in it.”

Ms Plibersek says she’s concerned about the situation on Manus Island.

“It is completely unacceptable – the refugees and asylum seekers have been there too long,” she told journalists in a statement.

“The government has completely failed these people.”

Ms Plibersek called for detainees to have access to essential services. But she stopped short of calling for the refugees to be brought to Australia.

Protestor Zeb Parks, 24, said it was unacceptable to force the former detainees to return to the countries they’d fled or accept resettlement in Papua New Guinea at the Lorengau transit camp where refugees have previously been attacked.

“We’re saying those options are not acceptable, it’s a gross violation of human rights, and we’re willing to stand in solidarity with them,” Mr Parks told AAP.

Conditions for the 600 refugees and asylum seekers on Manus Island have worsened in recent days with the men reportedly digging wells for water.

Refugee and detainee on Manus Island Behrouz Boochani chronicled the deteriorating conditions in the camp through Twitter on Friday afternoon.

“At the moment hundreds of naked men are lying around me,” he said.

“They are starving and their bodies are getting weak.”

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern this week reiterated her government’s offer to resettle 150 of the men from Manus Island or Nauru.

The Sydney protesters were ordered by police to leave Ms Plibersek’s office after midday and left peacefully.

Sydney: Report-Back from the ‘Straight Lives Matter’ Counter-Demo

23 Sept, 2017 – Anti-fascist counter protest to a tiny “Straight Lives Matter” rally, organised by far-right sect “Party For Freedom“.

The protest occurred in the context of the Marriage Equality postal vote, which has spark a huge upsurge in homophobic advertising by Christian groups, accompanied by a major up-tick in homophobic graffiti and assaults across the country.

The headbutt banner refers to an incident a couple day ago, when an anarchist skinhead in Hobart headbutted the christian conservative former Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott.

Here’s a short reportback from the rally by Anti Fascist Action Sydney:

‘We had many more people, we sang and we danced and we laughed and we loved but most of all we told the fascists to get the fuck out. We did not let them anywhere near the Queer holocaust remembrance memorial and we created great bonds of solidarity and friendship. There were some young Queer people who came, and it was their first rally an they said it was a fantastic experience.

Today was a big positive for anti-fascists, however it would be wrong of us not to mention the role of the Liberal Party in laying the groundworks for the Party for Freedom hate rally today. This is all a direct consequence of their stupid fucking plebiscite.’

Sydney: Event in Solidarity with Charlottesville Antifascists

22 Aug 2017 – On the 19th of August 2017, Anti Fascist Action Sydney in collaboration with others, held an event in Martin Place, Sydney in a show of Solidarity to the victims of the white supremacist rally held in Charlottesville, Virginia. This event was a stand against white supremacy, colonisation, racism and blatant genocide that is unfortunately prevalent not only in American society but in so called “Australian” society today. The support shown from attendees was amazing as well as the powerful, emotional and motivational speeches, there was a feeling of true strength and resistance against hate and bigotry.

Sydney: Solidarity against repression in Copenhagen

On May 17th police in Copenhagen raided 10 separate addresses, including the autonomous social centre Bumzen, arresting 25 people in all.

They are all facing heavy charges in relation to a riot in inner Copenhagen on March 1st 2017, on the ten-year anniversary of the eviction of Ungdomshuset, a long standing social centre within the far-left scene.

Four of the arrested have been remanded in prison. A number of solidarity noise demos have been called in response, outside the prison in Copenhagen.

On the other side of the world, in Sydney, some anarchists painted a mural in support of the arrested comrades.

No one hostage in the hands of the state.
