Houses have been torn to the ground by a huge 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti which is feared to have claimed people’s lives.

Pictures and video footage show piles of rubble in the city of Jeremie, about 125 miles west of the capital Port-au-Prince.

The quake hit at around 8.30pm local time today, about 30 minutes after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska.
