HANNAH CRANNA Better Lonely Days 1995

Hannah Cranna was a bit anachronistic during the 90’s – they sounded nothing like the Seattle bands that so dominated the music scene, in fact, their music harkened back to the then ultra uncool pop of The Beatles, The Kinks, Badfinger, Big Star and Buffalo Springfield – pure pop sounds that have enjoyed a great resurgence after the noise-drenched ’90’s. Their songs had strong, original melodies in a decade pretty much bereft of them. The first album, “Better Lonely Days” received a lot of praise for its unique pop sound, in fact the Ventura County & Coast proclaimed their songs could, “stand with anything Buddy Holly or those Beatles ever wrote”. Hannah Cranna’s packed showcase at the South by Southwest that year was one of the Austin Chronicle’s picks for the festival. Better Lonely Days was a well-received, critical success…”Hello” was picked up by about 80 radio stations and was even in regular rotation on WPLR in New Haven, CT – a major FM classic rock station. The eponymous second outing featured legendary Badfinger guitarist/singer/songwriter Joey Molland (also guitar player for George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Star in some of their solo work) as the producer. A somewhat darker tone pervaded this record, evoking a sense of melancholy reminiscent of Neil Young’s “Tonight’s the Night” or George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass” – even still, there was always a thread of humanism running through their music and in the end it was the uncompromising devotion to making great music that really set them apart.

Artist Biography by Mark Deming

Arriving nearly a decade after the first rise of U.K. punk, London's the Godfathers were a band that shrewdly embraced punk's hard-edged sound and outlook while adding elements of hard rock, R&B, and pop. As a consequence, they gave their music a level of craft and polish that made them accessible without blunting the rage in their best work.

Hit by Hit The Godfathers were formed in 1985 by lead singer Peter Coyne and his brother, bassist Chris Coyne. Both had previously been members of the Sid Presley Experience, and after that band's breakup, they were eager to start a new project. Teaming with guitarists Kris Dollimore and Mike Gibson and drummer George Mazur, the Godfathers wasted little time committing their music to vinyl, releasing a four-song EP, Capo di Tutti Capi, on their own Corporate Image label before 1985 was out. The Godfathers were prolific out of the gate, enough so that by 1986, they were able to assemble an album from their various EP and single releases, Hit by Hit. Between their solid recorded output and touring in the U.K., Europe, and United States, the Godfathers began attracting the attention of major labels, and Epic Records soon sealed a deal with the group.

Birth, School, Work, Death In 1988, the Godfathers released their first Epic album, Birth, School, Work, Death, which was a commercial success and spawned two singles, the title track and "'Cause I Said So," that fared well on MTV and modern rock radio. ("Birth School Work Death" also cracked the Mainstream Rock chart, peaking at 38.) Released in 1989, More Songs About Love & Hate produced another hit, "She Gives Me Love," which rose to number eight on the Modern Rock chart. The title track from 1991's Unreal World was also a Modern Rock hit, topping out at six, but like More Songs About Love & Hate, the album didn't benefit much from the success of the single, and it was the Godfathers' last album for Epic. The group revived the Corporate Image label to release a live album, Dope, Rock 'n' Roll & Fucking in the Streets, in 1992. Arriving in 1993, The Godfathers (known to fans as "The Orange Album" thanks to the citrus fruit that appeared on the cover) was released in Europe, where the band still had a strong following, and another European release, Afterlife, emerged in 1995. As interest in the band slowly faded, the Godfathers broke up in 2000.

Shot Live at the 100 Club The complete original lineup of the Godfathers returned in 2008 for a reunion tour, but in 2009 Kris Dollimore left, to be replaced by new guitarist Del Bartle. Drummer George Mazur bowed out not long after, with Grant Nicholas taking his place. The new lineup of the Godfathers cut a live album, Shot Live at the 100 Club, that was released in 2010 to celebrate the group's first 25 years. The band returned to the studio for the first time in 18 years to record 2013's Jukebox Fury, and in 2017 the band's latest lineup of lead vocalist Peter Coyne, guitarists Steve Crittal and Mauro Venegas, bassist Darren Birch, and drummer Tim James delivered a studio album of all new material, A Big Bad Beautiful Noise

Artist Biography by Heather Phares

Ohio-born and -based singer/guitarist/keyboardist Jenny Mae started her musical career as a trumpet player in her high school and college marching bands, and branched out to playing rock in bands like Hot Rod and the Rahvers during her studies at Ohio State University.

Her last band, Vibralux, was also the most popular, gaining attention for its sweet but gritty sound and Jenny Mae's breathy vocals. The band released a few acclaimed singles but split before a full-length work could be recorded; rather than waste the songs she wrote, Jenny Mae switched to a solo career.

After a split single with fellow Ohioans Guided By Voices, Jenny Mae released her debut album, There's a Bar Around the Corner...Assholes. The album featured a supporting band of friends from Ohio -- bands like Gaunt, Moviola, and the New Bomb Turks, and expanded on the solid pop ground she covered with Vibralux while exploring country, jazz, and electronic styles. Jenny Mae continued developing her sound on the 1998 follow-up Don't Wait Up for Me.

THE SWEETEST ACHE Grass Roots 1993

Artist Biography by Michael Sutton

The Welsh band the Sweetest Ache were one of the crown jewels in Sarah Records' kingdom of jangle-pop royalty. The Sweetest Ache was formed in 1989 by vocalist Simon Court, guitarists Peter Stone and Stuart Vincent, keyboardist Ian "Stretch" Saberton, bassist Dave Walters, and drummer Jimmy ‘Geriant'. The group released a handful of 7" singles in the early ‘90s, including "If I Could Shine" and "Everlasting", that were greeted with critical acclaim in the U.K. In 1992, the Sweetest Ache released their full-length debut, Jaguar. However, Sarah Records was on its final breath; a year later, the Sweetest Ache's second LP, Grass Roots, was instead picked up by Vinyl Japan. Grass Roots sold over 9,000 copies worldwide. As with the rest of Sarah Records' roster, the Sweetest Ache's whiny vocals and ‘60s-styled ringing guitars were out of step with the times but a growing Internet fan base in the late ‘90s elevated the band out of obscurity. In 1999, Sweet William paid homage to the Sweetest Ache on the double 7" EP A Smile Took Over. Court reunited with Vincent and Saberton in 2000 when they joined Shooter alongside Peter Moore (guitar, bass, keyboards), guitarist Mark Royston, bassist Steve Bugden, and drummer Andy Kersey.

Info about Crashland!...

Lyn Gordon (vocal, guitar) Ash Wednesday (sampler) Ray Moore (drums) Phil Sutherland (bass)

Crashland! began life as a twisted covers-band, intentionally playing songs from vague memories, rather than listening back to these tunes and then bothering to work them out. The plan was to breathe new life into old standards.
