If your country announces major policy shifts after midnight on a Friday night, you can be damn certain it is not well governed.

I’m going to get ratioed again but… Uncontrolled immigration is bad. The borders should be highly regulated. Turkey should demand the EU shares some of the existing burden. Agreed. But I don’t believe we should punish the immigrants themselves. That isn’t just or fair.

Kalpten direkt gidersin herhalde.

And to get the Gold medal, you have to get from Asia to Europe on the Boğaziçi Bridge at 6pm on a weekday without losing all your hair (I still blame part of my baldness on doing that journey every day)...

Also, those ballet dancing girls would get so much abuse if they tried that for real. Like trust me, that would not go down well with the local “amcas”. It’s all so frustratingly hypocritical really. And they always get away with it.

It is incredibly cheeky to attack Western lifestyles domestically while painting this deeply misleading fantasy of a Disneyland Istanbul that has never existed. If I were a headscarved woman, I’d be asking the AKP, “Where am I? Am I chopped liver?”

Racism and xenophobia are evil and we should all avoid them. For example, we simply shouldn’t call Germans “Nazis” or start stabbing oranges just to try to win an election.

And I might as well write it here: I have very little knowledge of what is happening in Tunisia and therefore have no opinion. This is one of those that I sit out and watch.

To the geniuses claiming Kurz meant Turkey and Afghanistan are “cultural neighbours”: 1) No he didn’t 2) Whilst the AKP might want that, it just ain’t true. Turkey is culturally nothing like Afghanistan and claiming it is shows massive ignorance of both countries.

Still finding it fairly mind blowing that countries nearly 2,000km apart, which it takes around five hours to fly to, are mentioned as neighboring. But of course, when it comes to refugees, the far right will say anything.

Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs giving a geography lesson to Sebastian Kurz: “First things first, contrary to Chancellor Kurz’s words, Turkey does not border Afghanistan.” Then states Turkey won’t be the EU’s border guard or refugee camp. This issue is heating up.

When he was making this statement, did no-one advise him of the logical consequence of the claim? He’s literally saying Turkey’s economy is built on quicksand. It’s the kind of thing the opposition should be saying. It’s political suicide. I don’t get it…

AKP Deputy Chair Yasin Aktay: “If you take out Syrians from key segments, Turkey’s economy would collapse.” Turkey has 35 millions adults who don’t work. This claim makes absolutely zero sense. It’s also an accidental confession that Turkey’s economy is toast.

Dear Sebastian Kurz, Afghanistan is not Turkey’s neighboring country. It’s not even a close country. Turkey is closer to Austria than it is to Afghanistan. Yours faithfully, Everyone in Turkey

I really would not trust Turkey to jail people over misinformation when the President himself has repeatedly said the UK charges people for the COVID vaccine.

“Our new law to protect the President is actually Canadian.” “Canadian law doesn’t say that.” “Shut up, it’s Canadian so it’s good.” “OK... Can we have all the other Canadian laws then? Like the ones on equality and freedom?” “No. That is Western decadence. Bad laws.”

Whenever the AKP proposes some law based on the “German” or “Japanese” or “US” model, know two things: 1) It will never be the same as in that other country 2) They won’t put in place all the other foreign laws that protect the individual, only ever ones that protect the state

They’re thinking of Germany’s Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz (NetzDG). Whilst NetzDG is extremely controversial and does contain penalties for hate speech, it has no enforceable mechanism to stop misinformation. Don’t trust me on that. Here’s Poynter:
