Every choice you make triggers a possible, different future—a parallel reality. If you could modify a past event, it would change your present. This paradox leads to time travel and impossible loops. Say hello to René Barjavel (Le Voyageur Imprudent), H.G. Wells, Philip K. Dick, and others who imagined multiple universes.
A ‘Maybeland‘ is a world where an alternate ‘you’ lives — or maybe not, as you might be dead, or you might never have been born. But some events push your destiny in another direction, so your history is different. You might be living in a different country, be married to a different person, have different kids, or none at all. The whole world may have turned out differently. It’s a classic theme of sci-fi literature and cinema.
The photo on the album’s front cover inspired the idea of Maybeland: a simple amateur shot taken by Dr Olive’s father in Bethesda, near Washington DC, in April 1970. Family matters caused Olive’s family to move back to France, despite his father’s career and preference to stay in the USA. In a possible parallel “Maybeland,” the family stayed, and Olive is an American. He might be a banker instead of a musician.

Dr Olive is an ambitious musician/producer who got his start in the ’80s as the vocalist and keyboardist in pioneering Parisian coldwave band Little Nemo. On his own, Olive released the acclaimed electronic albums First Dee-Jay On The Moon and Screenage Boogie as well as singles for labels like R&S, Missive Music, Dirty Dancing, and his Bazoline imprint.
The formation of Dr Olive & The Hoperators and the recording of Maybeland started in 2014, leading Olive toward a more spacious alternative rock sound. As the years passed, the album project mutated, adding the kosmiche-inspired ‘Germanium’ epic and the electronic ‘Maybeland Suite’ — a whimsical Philip K. Dick homage.
Finally completed and released in 2020, Maybeland appears on Olive’s new 3 To The 3rd Music imprint. In this reality, Maybeland arrives amid a pandemic. In some other world, it’s free to roam.
