Pink Floyd Recorded An Album That Was Too Weird For Them
After the immediate worldwide success of Dark Side of the Moon and the lengthy tour that followed its release, Pink Floyd's album Harvest Records went on another chart-topping moneymaker and fast. But when the Dark Side tour ended in June of 1973, the band took a break and went their own ways for four months.
By the time the members of Pink Floyd reconvened at Abbey Road Studios to record their next album, they realized they had no idea what to record next. How does a band top itself after they made one of the best selling albums of all time?
If the band is Pink Floyd, they record an experimental concept piece without the use of any musical instruments. Today, we're going to take a closer look at Household Items, Pink Floyd's lost album that ended up being too weird even for them.

Childhood’s End, from Obscured By Clouds, released June 1972 (2016 Remix)
Childhood's End, from Pink Floyd's seventh album Obscured By Clouds, has been remixed from the original master tapes in 2016 by Andy Jackson and Damon Iddins.
In February 1972, the band were already playing The Dark Side Of The Moon live and starting to record its songs, but production was briefly halted when they accepted their second commission for filmmaker Barbet Schroeder, to create the soundtrack for his feature film La Vallée.
In the last week of February 1972, Pink Floyd started work, at Strawberry Studios in Herouville, France, and as David Gilmour later described: “We sat in a room, wrote, recorded, like a production line.” The result was 10 pieces of music: six songs and four instrumentals, which Melody Maker described as “some of the most aggressive instrumentals the Floyd have recorded.”
David Gilmour’s Childhood's End was one of the few songs from the soundtrack to be included in Pink Floyd's live shows and was featured on European dates, starting on December 1, 1972, and at the start of the band's March 1973 tour of North America, usually with an extended instrumental passage.

"Comfortably Numb" is a song on Pink Floyd's eleventh album, The Wall (1979). It was released as a single in 1980 with "Hey You" as the B-side. The music was composed by guitarist David Gilmour, and lyrics were written by bassist Roger Waters.
The Wall is a concept album about an embittered and alienated rock star named Pink. In "Comfortably Numb," Pink is medicated by a doctor so he can perform for a show.
Guitarist David Gilmour recorded a wordless demo, and bassist Roger Waters wrote lyrics, inspired by an experience of being injected with tranquilizers for stomach cramps before a 1977 performance in Philadelphia on the In the Flesh Tour. "That was the longest two hours of my life," Waters said, "trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm." The song's working title was "The Doctor".
For the chorus, Gilmour and session player Lee Ritenour used a pair of acoustic guitars strung similarly to Nashville tuning, but with the low E string replaced with a high E string, two octaves higher than standard tuning. This tuning was also used for the arpeggios in "Hey You".
Waters and Gilmour disagreed about how to record the song; Gilmour preferred a more grungy style for the verses. Gilmour said: "We argued over 'Comfortably Numb' like mad. Really had a big fight, went on for ages." In the end, Waters' preferred opening and Gilmour's final solo were used.[citation needed]
To write the two guitar solos, Gilmour pieced together elements from several other solos he had been working on, marking his preferred segments for the final take.
Input: 720x480 29.97fps (source: DVD)
Output: 3840x2160 59.94fps

Pink Floyd can confirm that they are releasing a new album, The Endless River, in October 2014. It is an album of mainly ambient and instrumental music based on the 1993/4 Division Bell sessions which feature David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright. The album is produced by David Gilmour with Phil Manzanera, Youth and recording engineer Andy Jackson. Work is still in progress, but more details to come at the end of the summer.
On 5th July, through twitter, David Gilmour's wife, Polly Samson, leaked information about the new Pink Floyd album, its title being The Endless River. Also the tentative release date will be in the month of October.
Soon, the backing vocalist for Pink Floyd, Durga McBroom posted a photo of her alongside Gilmour in the recording studio. She shared on fb that the new album will consist mainly of the unreleased sessions from the Division Bell.
And here we have it, the first sneak peek at it.
