Bipartisan infrastructure deal will likely omit major climate change measures

White House negotiators and a group of senators struck a deal on a bipartisan infrastructure agreement on Thursday that will likely slash measures to combat climate change and help the U.S. transition to a clean-energy economy.

The narrow infrastructure deal would leave President Joe Biden’s proposals on climate change to a separate bill that Democrats could attempt to pass through Congress using reconciliation, a process that doesn’t require Republican support.

The second package could also include programs related to child and elder care, education, and health care, in addition to climate change measures, issues that administration officials have called “human infrastructure.”

The expected elimination of climate measures in the plan comes as the world grapples with the effects of climate change — including worsening disasters like hurricanes, wildfires and droughts — and scientists urge that immediate action to slash greenhouse emissions is critical to avoid the worst consequences of global warming. Details of the plan are expected to be revealed later on Thursday.

“We made serious compromises on both ends … We’ll see what happens in the reconciliation bill and the budget process,” the president said at the White House on Thursday.

See? They’ll just add climate cult stuff back in, at which point do they lose Republican support? We can almost guarantee there is too much Crazy in the bipartisan agreement to start with. This is what Democrats consider serious compromises: keeping a good chunk of what they want, giving Republicans almost nothing, then putting things back in.

San Francisco To Require All City Employees To Be Vaccinate Or Get Fired

San Francisco will require all city workers to get COVID vaccine

San Francisco’s roughly 35,000 city employees will be required to get the coronavirus vaccine — or else possibly face getting fired, local officials said Wednesday.

The new policy would likely make the northern California city the first in the US to mandate that all government staffers be inoculated against COVID-19, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Exemptions will be granted for medical or religious reasons, the report said. Workers without exemptions who still refuse to get vaccinated will face “repercussions [that] go all the way up to termination,” said Mawuli Tugbenyoh, chief of policy for the city’s Department of Human Resources. (snip)

Employees will then have 10 weeks to get their jabs, and will be required to report their vaccination status through the city’s payroll system. They will need to provide proof, such as a photo of their vaccination card.

Roughly 55 percent of city workers have said that they are already at least partially vaccinated, according to the Chronicle.

By the numbers: Data released on June 11 shows 80% of eligible residents had received at least one dose.

Nearly 70% of all San Franciscans had been fully vaccinated by this date.

San Francisco has a long way to go for the employees to get the vaccine, and it will be tough to get the workforce fully vaccinated. Even in a super leftist city like SF it is tough to get everyone to Comply. Will they sack employee? I guess we’ll learn in 10 weeks. And we’ll learn whether they really mean they’ll allow medical and/or religious exemptions.

The case for a defense budget that focuses more on China, less on climate change

Since President Biden’s inauguration, we have seen what happens when America projects weakness rather than strength.

On May 8, the Taliban targeted and killed 85 people, mostly girls going to school in Kabul. On May 12, Hamas launched a relentless rocket attack against Israel wounding over 500. Earlier this year, Russia began massing over 100,000 troops on the Ukrainian border and a Russia-linked cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline last month shutdown 45 percent of the gasoline supplied to the East Coast. Beijing is increasing its military activity in the South China Sea and continues to violate freedoms in Hong Kong and threaten Taiwan. In the midst of this, the Biden administration has been absent. Weakness invites chaos and when America steps back from its leadership role in the world, as President Biden has done, violence and unrest are the result.

One of the ways America signals to the world that we will continue to be a global leader is by maintaining a strong national defense. Unfortunately, President Biden’s proposed FY2022 defense budget sends the wrong message to our allies and our adversaries. By failing to keep pace with inflation, the President’s budget amounts to a cut of over $4 billion in defense spending. Meanwhile, his budget proposes to increase non-defense spending by a massive $104 billion or 16 percent.

Furthermore, within that reduced topline, the administration redirects nearly $650 million in critically needed military modernization and procurement funding to climate change and to monitor the social media accounts of our servicemembers. These initiatives have nothing to do with ensuring we have a lethal force ready to “fight tonight”. When we dedicate scarce defense funding to global climate change, biofuels initiatives, and social engineering experiments with military personnel you can almost hear the cheers and laughter of our adversaries.

Defense is in the Constitution, a duty that is explicit mentioned: the climate emergency nuttery is not. China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea are loving this (along with the other insane stuff, like teaching critical race theory, going after any service member engaged in Wrongthink, the gender confused, and more). What else would you expect from Dementia Joe? He’s all sorts of worried about the imaginary and manufactured issue of climate doom. But not enough to cut out his own use of fossil fuels.

Why Police Have Been Quitting in Droves in the Last Year

As protests surged across the country last year over the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police, Officer Lindsay C. Rose in Asheville, N.C., found her world capsized.

Various friends and relatives had stopped speaking to her because she was a cop. During a protest in June around Police Headquarters, a demonstrator lobbed an explosive charge that set her pants on fire and scorched her legs.

She said she was spit on. She was belittled. Members of the city’s gay community, an inclusive clan that had welcomed her in when she first settled in Asheville, stood near her at one event and chanted, “All gay cops are traitors,” she said.

By September, still deeply demoralized despite taking several months off to recuperate, Officer Rose decided that she was done. She quit the Police Department and posted a sometimes bitter, sometimes nostalgic essay online that attracted thousands of readers throughout the city and beyond.

“I’m walking away to exhale and inhale, I’m leaving because I don’t have any more left in me right now,” she wrote. “I’m drowning in this politically charged atmosphere of hate and destruction.”

Officer Rose was hardly alone. Thousands of police officers nationwide have headed for the exits in the past year.

A survey of almost 200 police departments indicated that retirements were up 45 percent and resignations rose by 18 percent in the year from April 2020 to April 2021 when compared with the previous 12 months, according to the Police Executive Research Forum, a Washington policy institute.

New York City saw 2,600 officers retire in 2020 compared with 1,509 the year before. Resignations in Seattle increased to 123 from 34 and retirements to 96 from 43. Minneapolis, which had 912 uniformed officers in May 2019, is now down to 699. At the same time, many cities are contending with a rise in shootings and homicides.

And then these same cities saw their crime skyrocket, including murder and attempted murder. Surprise!

The fact that the protests were directed at them pushed many officers to quit, he said. “They said that we have become the bad guys, and we did not get into this to become the bad guys.”

A sense that the city (of Asheville) itself did not back its police was a key reason for the departures, according to officers themselves as well as police and city officials. Officers felt that they should have been praised rather than pilloried after struggling to contain chaotic protests.

And that’s pretty much the only mention. Defund the police? One quick mention later. The police in Asheville, who were initially praised after dealing with the unhinged, violent protests, were then pilloried by the police chief and mayor. We saw the video: the police were being attacked, violence was going on, and the high mucky-mucks expected the officers to essentially say “pretty please, stop” to these nutjobs.

To make do, the A.P.D. has trimmed its services even as shootings and other violent crimes escalated, a trend that has been seen across the country and which many experts have connected to disruption from the pandemic. The police received about 650 calls for “shots fired” last year, Chief Zack said, and there were 10 homicides, compared with seven the year before. Aggravated assaults were also up.

The department shuttered a downtown satellite office, stopped bicycle patrols and is making fewer traffic stops. It published a list of 10 incidents to which it would no longer dispatch officers, including some vehicle thefts, and urged citizens to file simple complaints online rather than calling.

All but one of the seven officers who investigated domestic violence and sexual assault left, so the department is trying to get three officers up to speed on the skills needed.

Asheville isn’t Portland or Chicago: it’s a very nice, middle of nowhere city in the NC mountains that was once very safe, a wonderful weekend destination for so many. Now? Neighborhood Scout ranks it a 1, which is the worst number a city can get. That’s worse than Chicago. Violent crime is double the NC and US rates, and property crime is almost 3 times the NC and US rates. All those people who caused problems and want to slam the cops, defund them, abuse them in Asheville? They should be required to stay, so they can deal with the fallout of their policies.

Crushing climate impacts to hit sooner than feared: draft UN report

Climate change will fundamentally reshape life on Earth in the coming decades, even if humans can tame planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions, according to a landmark draft report from the UN’s climate science advisors obtained by AFP.

Species extinction, more widespread disease, unliveable heat, ecosystem collapse, cities menaced by rising seas—these and other devastating climate impacts are accelerating and bound to become painfully obvious before a child born today turns 30.

The choices societies make now will determine whether our species thrives or simply survives as the 21st century unfolds, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says in a draft report seen exclusively by AFP.

But dangerous thresholds are closer than once thought, and dire consequences stemming from decades of unbridled carbon pollution are unavoidable in the short term.

By far the most comprehensive catalogue ever assembled of how climate change is upending our world, the report reads like a 4,000-page indictment of humanity’s stewardship of the planet.

This “report” is 4,000 pages, but, sadly, won’t be released in time for the next UN IPCC COP in Glasgow late this year (with thousands taking long fossil fueled trips to attend), but, giving up some Doom-mongering as the summer hits plays well with the Cult of Climastrology.

Here’s the question (besides the normal of “when will these people practice what they preach?”): what are the consequences to those who attach their name to this report, along with those who doom-cheer it, rather than being skeptical, 30 years from now when none of this comes to fruition?

There is very little good news in the report, but the IPCC stresses that much can be done to avoid worst-case scenarios and prepare for impacts that can no longer be averted, the final takeaway.

Conservation and restoration of so-called blue carbon ecosystems—kelp and mangrove forests, for example—enhance carbon stocks and protect against storm surges, as well as providing wildlife habitats, coastal livelihoods and food security.

Transitioning to more plant-based diets could also reduce food-related emissions as much as 70 percent by 2050.

But simply swapping a gas guzzler for a Tesla or planting billions of trees to offset business-as-usual isn’t going to cut it, the report warns.

“We need transformational change operating on processes and behaviours at all levels: individual, communities, business, institutions and governments,” it says.

Strange, a complete change of everything. Who’s in charge of this?

Surprise: There Are Lots Of Problems With California’s Don’t Call It A COVID Passport System

California’s digital COVID-19 vaccination record has glitches. Here’s how to fix yours

When California officials unveiled a new system to provide digital COVID-19 vaccine records last week, they billed it as a convenience, an easy way for residents to demonstrate and verify their inoculation status.

But the offering has not been without hiccups. Already, the state has received nearly 70,000 troubleshooting forms submitted online by residents looking to correct or complete their information, according to the California Department of Public Health.

Though only a fraction of the 558,000 digital records that have successfully been created since the system went live Friday, the numbers demonstrate how even relatively uncommon issues can wind up inconveniencing tens of thousands of people. (snip)

Records are accessible through myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov. There, Californians are prompted to provide their name, date of birth and the email address or cellphone number they used when getting their vaccine. They will also need to create a four-digit personal identification number.

If the submitted information matches an official record, the resident will get an email or text with a link to access a digital copy of the inoculation record, as well as a QR code.

That sounds great, providing the State with your direct email and/or cellphone number, right? What could go wrong?

One snag that’s emerged is the requirement for an email address or phone number — which has to match what a person submitted when receiving her or his COVID-19 vaccine.

However, that information might be missing for some. Because the system pulls from records maintained within and accessible through the state’s immunization registry systems, it’s also conceivable someone’s record may be filed under an email address or phone number that’s either outdated or was used for a non-COVID-19 vaccine.

So, wait, the state has records for non-Bat Soup Virus vaccines?

The state’s website says that residents should include photos of their physical vaccine cards from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as a valid form of ID. However, as of Monday morning, there appeared to be no way to attach photos to the troubleshooting form before submitting.

Oh, good, the California public health department would now have your ID….wait, I thought ID to identify yourself was bad for Progressives? Anyhow, there’s no chance anything bad could happen with this, right? The records couldn’t get out, couldn’t be used improperly, right?

Heck, even the ACLU of North Carolina said back in March that there’s a lot that can go wrong, and they would prefer a paper system. One thing they mentioned is that it should not allow for tracking or the creation of new databases. California’s sure look like it’s going that way.

Anyhow

Hey, if I need my card or pictures of my card to get on a flight, fine. I’m not giving all sorts of information to Government which could misuse it.

Rolling Stone: We’re In An Air Conditioned Nightmare Or Something

Remember when Rolling Stone used to focus on music and stuff? How they were counter-culture like rock and roll, sticking it to the man, not taking the side of Government? Boy howdy, that’s changed quite a bit. What surely hasn’t changed is how the office of Rolling Stone, along with all the employees at their homes, are still air conditioned to a very comfortable temperature (you can read the whole thing here at Yahoo News)

Our Air-Conditioned Nightmare

Heat is entropy. Heat is chaos. The hotter something gets, the more kinetic energy it has: molecules vibrate, relationships change, life overheats, things die.

You can see that out west right now. Last week, a heat dome formed over the Great Plains all the way out to the California coast. Salt Lake City boiled at 107°F, the hottest temperature ever recorded there. In Las Vegas, it was more than 100 degrees at night. Phoenix hit at least 115°F five days in a row, setting a new record for the city. The health impacts of heat waves are difficult to track in real time, but public-health officials in the Phoenix area are already investigating the heat-related deaths of nine people in a single day (June 17th). More heat is forecast for this week, this summer, and, as long as the world keeps burning fossil fuels, many years to come. Brutal as it seems, this is just heat bootcamp compared to what we will be facing in the not-so-distant future.

Interestingly, we’re told that cold weather records are either meaningless or actually support the climate crisis (scam).

But long before that, the most obvious impact of extreme heat is that it pushes people to turn on – and turn up – their air-conditioning. With cool air, you can feel the chaos within you subsiding. But it comes at a cost: AC sucks up huge amounts of electricity, which strains the grid and increases the risk of blackouts. More electricity also means burning fossil fuels, which means more CO2 pollution (President Biden has promised a 100 percent clean electricity grid by 2035, but that’s still a long way off). In addition, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), the human-made chemicals inside of air-conditioners used to cool the air, are super greenhouse gases, up to 3,000 times more potent than CO2 at trapping heat in the atmosphere. What it comes down to is this: By cooling ourselves off, we risk cooking ourselves to death.

It wouldn’t strain the grid if we weren’t replacing viable, dependable, affordable energy sources with unreliable, undependable, more expensive sources. We rarely have issues with energy here in North Carolina during high temperature spells. You would think areas, such as Nevada and Arizona, would build a power supply and grid that supports an area that gets hot, and is seeing a lot of people moving there.

And it’s pretty much a given that as the planet heats up, the demand for air-conditioning will grow fast, especially in the developing world, where air-conditioning is still a luxury that few people can afford. There are just over 1 billion single-room air conditioning units in the world right now – about one for every seven people on Earth. By 2050, there are likely to be more than 4.5 billion units, making them as common as cellphones today.

What’s the solution to this cascade of heat-driven chaos? The most obvious one: Stop burning fossil fuels. For all intents and purposes, when carbon emissions reach zero, warming will stop and the temperature in the atmosphere will level-out (they will stay at that level until CO2 levels fall, which, barring the massive deployment of some new technology that can suck CO2 out of the atmosphere, will take many hundreds of years). But since we are obviously not going to be living in a zero-carbon world anytime soon, increasing the efficiency of AC units can help, as can developing and commercializing new technologies to cool the air without destroying the planet (in the U.S., new efficiency standards for AC units will take effect in 2023). In some places, heat pumps, which both heat and cool buildings, can be a smart option. And earlier this year, the winners of a $1 million Global Cooling Prize were announced, showcasing new technology that promises to have five times less climate impact than traditional AC units.

What if warming doesn’t stop? What if most warming is caused by natural processes? What then? Has Rolling Stone given up it’s own use of fossil fuels? How about the readership who’s agreeing with the article?

But there are simpler solutions, too. Last week, the respected medical journal Lancet published a largely overlooked paper about humble technology that can do a lot to help solve the problems of extreme heat: the electric fan.

Will you give up your use of AC and start using fans instead? How about you, all your Warmists? No takers? RS spends their next eight paragraphs telling us that fans are awesome, but, doesn’t have a photo of fans all over the RS office with the AC turned off. Weird, right?
