Ampol partners with Tesla as it eyes electric, hydrogen future
Solar panels and Tesla batteries will begin to be installed at Ampol sites as part of its future fuels strategy.
National fuel distributor Ampol is partnering with Tesla as it pushes ahead with a sustainable fuels strategy, with the aim to reduce emissions and provide 'green' fueling solutions to Australian motorists.
Recognising the trajectory of the automotive industry, Ampol – formerly known as Caltex – has unveiled a strategy to change from a petrol and diesel retailer to a recharge and refueling network for electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen vehicles.
The company will install solar panels and Tesla Powerwall battery packs to create 'virtual power plants' across three pilot sites, with the view to create a network for EVs and lower carbon emissions. Ampol plans to reach net zero emissions by 2040.
A total of $100 million will be spent by Ampol by 2025 on 'future energy' projects, with a focus on sustainably-supplied hydrogen and electricity.
Ampol says it is partnering with Fusion Fuel Green to test solar-powered hydrogen production at a plant in Lytton, Queensland.
Currently only Hyundai and Toyota offer hydrogen-powered cars in Australia to select customers, but it's expected a handful of other manufacturers will begin offering hydrogen models in the coming years.
