Artworks that depict seas, rivers, and other bodies of water, as well as maritime subjects—sailors, naval battles, ports, ships, and the like. Although these motifs are most commonly associated with artists and movements pre-dating the industrial revolution, contemporary artists like Sean Landers, Vera Lutter, and Hiroshi Sugimoto continue to explore a fascination with life on the water.
