Plot: A bookshop renowned for its rare works is mysteriously and completely filled with copies of a book entitled 1, which doesn't appear to have a publisher or author. The strange almanac describes what happens to the whole of humanity in the space of a minute. A police investigation begins and the bookshop staff are placed in solitary confinement by the Bureau for Paranormal Research (RDI Reality Defense Institute). As the investigation progresses, the situation becomes more complex and the book increasingly well known, raising numerous controversies (political, scientific, religious and artistic). Quotes:
Swan Tamel: What the eyes sees, and what I see in the eye is identical.
Swan Tamel: The exception weakens the rule and only where the boundary is rigid.
Richard Lance: You like everyone but I... I don't. I don't even like you. I don't like any of you and you should bear that in mind.::Swan Tamel: You'll remind me of that later anyway. And you could look after yourself better. Love is the measure of normality.
Swan Tamel: Don't deceive yourself!::Phil Pitch: Don't worry about me. I have cleared up bigger shit than this before.::Swan Tamel: So you should be able to sense the difference. Everything is suspended from above and depends on what is beneath it. There are no exceptions.
Tom Keats: The girl's improved.::Phil Pitch: Improved?::Tom Keats: If she has anything to say, she's going to say it!::Phil Pitch: She could speak before or did you silence her?
Doctor Anselmi: Swan? He's not happy because of that. He's happy because he never lies.::Phil Pitch: You don't need to lie if you've got the Vatican on your side.::Doctor Anselmi: If I did the insinuation-factor analysis on you, you wouldn't even have God on your side! I used the same technique on astronauts for four years! And not one could hide a thing.
Behavior Scientist: These are all messages from a strong intellect. Someone who not only wants to feel superior, but who actually is superior at this moment in time.
Richard Lance: Might I know why the evaluation didn't begin on time?::Phil Pitch: It did but you were late.::Richard Lance: The exact time...::Phil Pitch: The exact time is the time my watch shows!
Swan Tamel: You should sleep. One gets tired without dreams.::Phil Pitch: Then you still must dream a lot.::Swan Tamel: Never enough. But... always something significant.::Phil Pitch: I'm sorry but I have alarming news for you! You are now an official suspect. We have material evidence. I don't understand how you thought I wouldn't realise.::Swan Tamel: I would never have guessed. But I was starting to worry after a week. Don't blame yourself! Often the most obvious is the least suspicious.::Phil Pitch: Can I take that as a confession?::Swan Tamel: Why should I deny what happened?::Phil Pitch: Because it's punishable by law.::Swan Tamel: The law? What I refer to as the law is vigilance!::Phil Pitch: Why did you smuggle the book out?::Swan Tamel: Because people need to confront themselves.::Phil Pitch: They need to confront reality.::Swan Tamel: It is sufficient for reality that it exists. Why do you want to defend it at all costs?::Phil Pitch: It's my job. I'm just doing my job.::Swan Tamel: And marvel gets in the way of your work?::Phil Pitch: I'm the one asking questions here!::Swan Tamel: Reality is a matter of subjectivity. You'll soon see!::Phil Pitch: Tell me more about the Vatican!::Swan Tamel: Two kinds of people live on the earth: the guilty who think they are genuine, and the genuine who know they are guilty.::Phil Pitch: That's quite alright.
Swan Tamel: Now you are afraid because you're on your own.::Phil Pitch: It's difficult not to be afraid...::Swan Tamel: Difficult? It's difficult like everything that is simple and natural.

Quotes:
Scott: Well, let's face it, I'm not well!
Tod: Peggy, did it ever occur to you that to me you'll always be beautiful no matter how old you grow? I'll always remember you as you were the last day I saw you - young, beautiful, bright, excitimg. No one who can see can say that to you. Peg, you're so beautiful... so beautiful outside... so rotten inside.
Scott: You know I don't understand much about painting.::Tod: There's nothing much to understand. It hasn't anything to do with the brain. It's the eye. A painting's like a woman. She either thrills you or she doesn't.
Peggy: [to Scott, who's clutching a dead man's life jacket he has found] If you're so afraid about ghosts, Lieutenant, what about that jacket you're holding?
Scott: [Admiring the paintings] These must be worth a fortune now that you're... [Scott hesitates to say 'blind.']::Tod: Since you're convinced I'm blind, go ahead... say it, but you're right. Now that I can't paint anymore, this stuff of mine gets more valuable every day. There's an old saying in my trade: a man never gets rich until he's dead. I assure you a blind painter's just the same as a dead man.
