The Central Tablelands around Oberon and Black Springs is normally considered a well watered area, but as the current drought crisis tightens its grip across NSW, this region is also feeling the pinch. Primary producers in the district are likening the current drought to the drought of 1982. Failed Summer and Autumn rains meant that ground cover for livestock did not eventuate before the onset of the Winter cold leaving paddocks bare and hand feeding of stock is the daily norm. The Oberon Lake, which Alpine waters supply livestock with water is currently at 55% and further water restrictions will kick in when the Water reserves drop to 49%. According to Gary Wallace, General manager of Oberon Council, on Friday 17th August, the council received dual warnings from the RFS and BOM of dangerous bushfire conditions and extreme weather with possible snow blizzards . Images show the Sunday 18th snow falls across the land with snow settling on the barren paddocks and dried dams, a sight that is rarely witnesses across drought affected landscapes.
