Zuko finding out about the gaang’s shenanigans after joining them and vice versa is still the funniest thing to me and I think about it all the time

Zuko: where did you even find toph?

Sokka: oh we ran into her while she was a pro wrestling champion

Zuko: .. that twelve yr old blind girl was a what now??

~

Zuko: you said you tried firebending before? Who taught you?

Aang: this strange guy called jeong jeong who lived in a forest

Zuko, who grew up in the firenation and probably heard all about this man: THE DESERTER??

Aang: ya how’d you know??

~

Aang: you know what’s strange? Zhao seemed to just disappear after the north pole... I wonder what happened?

Zuko: oh he’s dead

Aang: w-what?

Zuko: yea. Watched him drown too. A big grabby hand got him and dragged him into the ocean

Aang: .... *crying*

~

Zuko: so what did you guys do while hiding in the fire nation?

Aang: oh not much tbh, I went to school for like two days, Katara and I blew up a factory, we cleaned a river, Toph scammed a whole town, Katara learned bloodbending and I went to therapy

Zuko:

Aang: did I forget anything? Oh right Sokka got a sword

Coffee shop AU, except the original media’s setting is otherwise largely unaltered – it just has a coffee shop in it now, or the nearest remotely plausible equivalent.

I would think that lack of remote plausibility would be a positive feature in this context

There are two distinct creative avenues to weigh against one another:

1. The incongruity and humour value of having an unaltered early 21st Century American-style coffee shop where no such coffee shop could conceivably be; versus

2. The worldbuidling exercise of bending both the established setting and the definition of “coffee shop” just enough that the presence of something that is recognisably a coffee shop becomes halfway plausible if you don’t think about it too hard.

paradoxius

Thesis: most of Shakespeare’s plays can be near-effortlessly reworked so most of the action takes place in period London coffee shops.

Notable exceptions:

  • Macbeth, both because it takes place in a distinctly exotic setting and would have a hard time traveling to Elizabethan London, and because it’s already been set in a 20th century fast food place in a major motion picture twice so I think it deserves a break.
  • Midsummer Night’s Dream because if you start and end the play in a coffee shop, almost all of it ends up taking place in the woods behind the coffee shop.
  • Troilus and Cressida for the obvious reason.

Plays where the definition of “coffee shop” must be stretched somewhat:

  • Tempest requires the coffee shop be in the middle of nowhere and also large and labyrinthine enough for multiple groups of people to be separated from each other, which are both plausible because it’s owned by a wizard.
  • Winter’s Tale requires a second coffeeshop owned and operated by carefree peasants.
  • Romeo and Juliet, Antony and Cleopatra, and most of the Henrys need two competing shops.
  • Pericles, Prince of Tyre needs like six coffee shops and, along with Measure for Measure, Merchant of Venice, and pretty much all of the histories and tragedies, the shops’ owners need mortal authority.

From there on, it’s pretty straightforward. There are going to be a lot of conflicts over which of the owner’s kids will inherit the coffee shop, of course. In the case of Julius Caesar, it’s a question of whether the co-op manager will be made sole owner. Measure for Measure’s coffeeshop has upstairs tenants who are operating a brothel without permission of the landlord, who goes on vacation and tells his puritan manager to deal with it. Weirdly, I think Titus Andronicus actually works better this way.

“Shakespeare, set in somewhere extremely far removed from Classical Theater” is my favorite genre of Shakespeare.

Also Titus Andronicus is MUCH better as a Coffeeshop AU, and I would absolutely attend a performance set inside an actual coffee shop, espeically if they had the good sense to provide free snacks for the audience before hand. Little hand pies and finger food sort of thing :).

the idea of john cena sitting down to watch supernatural, getting to the gunnar lawless episode and being like “oh dean is bi for sure” and then getting to later seasons and saying “oh he’s bi and in love with his best friend” and then getting to 15x18 and feeling so strongly about it that he tweets about love confessions said too late and then follows a bunch of destiel accounts is so. so funny.
