Welcome to the Anglo-Catholic History Society pages. The Society was formed in 2000 and seeks to promote the study of the history of the Anglo-Catholic movement in the Anglican Communion. This includes the High Church movements from the late sixteenth century as well as the Oxford Movement itself, Ritualism and Anglo-Catholicism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, both in England and elsewhere.

The Society meets three times a year in various London churches for a lecture – these are usually held in early October, late January and June. For more details see our Events page. Lectures cover a variety of topics in the subject fields mentioned and are made accessible for those with different levels of expertise and knowledge.

Lecture news

Professor Aston's January lecture was cancelled and has been rescheduled for January 2022. In its place, members have been sent a splendid paper by Professor David Yeandle on The Clash of Churchmanship in Nineteenth Century St Ives: The Coming of Anglo-Catholicism.

Members should have received the October lecture which Professor Elizabeth Stuart has kindly prepared, entitled Roman Catholic Reactions to the Oxford Movement and Its Heirs.

They should also have received a paper by our member Robin Price on The Priests of St John the Baptist, Holland Road, London W14.

Sadly the lecture on 4th June by Professor Andrew Louth on V. A. Demant has also been cancelled but we hope to publish it later.

We resume on 4th October with a lecture by Canon James Garrard on the view of the Oxford Movement by Archbishop Howley at Lambeth.
This will be preceded by the Annual General Meeting at 6:30 p.m.
