Maersk, the world’s largest container shipper, has seen record profits. The Danish shipping firm whose customers include Walmart and Nike announced May 2021 first-quarter revenue of $12.4 billion, a 30% increase from a year earlier. Maersk has a fleet of over 700 ships and handles one in every five containers shipped by sea. The company also owns terminals around the world and has a growing land-based logistics business. On average a Maersk container ship calls on a port somewhere around the globe every six minutes. Like its competitors the company has faced a series of obstacles in the first half of 2021 ra...

What’s Causing The Container Ship Traffic Jam Clogging Up Global Trade
Around the world, some major ports are experiencing a huge influx of containers, resulting in long supply delays. Trade wars, high demand, and a pandemic have created a perfect storm for the container ship industry which is trying to stay organized in the face of a wave of market unpredictability.
The Ever Given, which clogged up the super important Suez Canal back in March of 2021, was the canary in the coal mine for recent global trade slowdowns. But before this calamity, disruptions from the Covid-19 pandemic hit port after port, with the aftershocks hitting the consumer market.
In 2019, 11.1 billion tons of goods were moved across the world's oceans. And according to the World Shipping Council, the liner industry moves more than $4 trillion in goods annually. These vessels depend on ...

By land, trucks move nearly 71 percent of all freight tonnage in the United States, but there's a shortage of truck drivers in the United States. So how do you speed up shipments while keeping personnel low? The future of shipping looks very much unmanned.

These vessels depend on people to get them from A to B and the complex logistics systems that make up the global trade network. But what happens when things don't go according to plan?

Today, container ships transport more than 90% of all goods in the world, but it can take over a month for those goods to sail from Beijing to New York. Cargo drones could be the disruption needed in a global supply chain that has been largely unchanged since the 1950s.
By land, trucks move nearly 71 percent of all freight tonnage in the United States, but there's a shortage of truck drivers in the United States. So how do you speed up shipments while keeping personnel low? The future of shipping looks very much unmanned.
