Retreating into chill with: Aonian – Hideout (Edit) #Chill #Electronic #Downtempo

•April 24, 2021 • Leave a Comment

It’s a beautiful morning here and the forecast is for a nice warm day. And it’s the weekend. Thankfully. Time to relax with a lovely chilled track from the returning Aonian.

Aonian (Alkis Livathinos) is from London but the heart of his music is somewhere much more sun drenched, Greece. It’s been a while but Hideout (Edit) is a second ‘chapter’ from his forthcoming debut album. The idea of the track is that, “each of us builds their own “hideout” in times of crises, a place of inner safety and familiarity.”

This is a really lovely track. From the outset it offers soothing but intricate sounds and a solid wood block type of percussion. The focus of the track ends up being a snaking piano line that subtly dominates the electronics which gently give way. But it has a non-traditional piano form. Aonian explains that, “The motif was written on the Oud, but I then recorded it on the piano where it took a completely different form, and I ended up adding organic percussive elements built from places and memories of my motherland.”

The track is all about security of memory. Of memories past. Of memories created in the present. But all with a sepia electronic glow. A special track for your special memory place.

WArming deep house with: Archie Holmes – Hollow #DeepHouse #House #Downtempo

•April 23, 2021 • Leave a Comment

The sun is shining but it’s still a bit nippy out there. Makes it perfect for the sunny and warming deep house of Archie Holmes.

Archie is a producer from Aylesbury, Bucks in England. He says he, “likes to experiment when it comes to producing and DJ as he chooses not to stick to one genre, spanning a wide range from Organic House to Drum and Bass.” We’re very much in former territory on only his second release (he’s only 17) – Hollow.

Hollow is a delicious track with a maturity that belies his years. It has more than a bit of the languid warmth of Lane8’s releases about it. The beats are set to chill with an organic house feel. There’s some wordless vocal element lifting it a touch into the ethereal space. But it remains grounded enough through a solid synth line that weaves around but in so doing holds the whole track together. There’s an enveloping calm and lightness about this track. It’s like putting your hands round a warming first hot drink of the day. An anticipatory glow that delivers perfectly.

Pre-Friday Techno with: Cookies Slayer- Them #Techno

•April 22, 2021 • Leave a Comment

Let’s go dark for Pre-Friday techno with the return of Cookies Slayer.

Cookies Slayer is a Producer, DJ and Sound Editor/Designer for movies and video games based in Montpellier, France. Most of his stuff pitches somewhere between techno and trance. And you get a bit of that on Them but with some tribal and some breakbeats thrown in for good measure.

Them is perfectly 50s B-Movie type of title and indeed the track does deliver a fabulous movie sample of that type. But this is no cheesy techno track. This is properly a dark soundscape. It starts off all spectral and a bit spooky. Then comes the growing beats and the warning of the dystopian future. The track is self-confident enough not to need to dive straight into some powerful break, choosing to spend more time on the almost psychedelic build up.

The break does eventually come about half way through the track when the percussion goes a bit more breakbeat and things feel a bit more tribal techno. But the mood is never less than dark with no real hint of the light. If you’ve got that end-of-the-week, end-of-the-world vibe then this is just perfect for you.

Midweek Ambient: Sina Bathaie – Shades #Ambient #Downtempo

•April 21, 2021 • Leave a Comment

I was planning to save this for Ambient Sunday but I need this now. It’s already been that sort of week. Some beautifully delivered ambient world music from Sina Bathaie.

Sina Bathaie is a composer, Santur player based in Toronto, Canada but born in Iran. Sina started learning Santur (a Persian hammered dulcimer) at the age seven from his father, Master Javad Bathaie and studied Persian classical repertoire (Radif) with the instrument Oud (a string instrument a bit like a lute).

He’s done film scores and the like but what we get here is a live performance of Shades that mixes traditional instrumentation with electronics in an incredibly skilful way. It’s a live looping performance featuring Handpan (Hang Drum) and the Santur. The Santur takes the lead – a bit like in the clavichord in Orbital’s The Box. The looping of the Santur and the beats gives the whole thing a deliciously mesmeric quality as it chimes away so delicately. But it contains enough variety within to hold your attention throughout. Somewhat slack-jawed in wonder in my case. Beautiful restorative track.

Experimental DnB with: Red Ran The Mathematikal – Illiquid #DrumAndBass #IDM

Time to delve into something that experiments with form and style with Red Ran The Mathematikal and his dark flavoured drum and bass track.

Red Ran The Mathematikal is a multi-instrumentalist from Sri Lanka. He says that he’s, “inspired by the seemingly opposite spheres of nature and technology. He takes a scientific approach to constructing breakbeat and drum & bass rhythms. These are coupled with ambient soundscapes inspired by the mountains and seas.”

Illiquid is the title track from his new two track release. It’s an attempt to subvert the liquid drum and bass sound. He says it’s, “an attempt to create a track that sounds like the polar opposite of a liquid drum ‘n’ bass tune.” I don’t know if it quite succeeds in that ambition, since what you’re given is a rather lovely piece of dark jazzy experimentation on the liquid drum and bass style.

Opening with strings that have a flavour of China or Japan, this ambient soundscape is undercut by a menacing far off bass drone. Cymbals crash and jazzy chords arrive before the hi hats and bass take this into territory explored by the Samurai Red label. This is drum and bass given an IDM spin but not forgetting its jazz roots. He’s not a fan of the IDM label but it does rather fit, since it has that experimental Warp edge to it. Ultimately, it’s a brilliantly executed track celebrating a minimal drum and bass style. Clever, clever stuff.

Dark progressive house with: Daniel Daraban – Conundrum #Techno #ProgressiveHouse

•April 19, 2021 • Leave a Comment

No mucking about for the start of the week. Ignore those articles on ‘How to make Mondays less Monday-ish.’ Get straight down to it with some dark progressive house from Daniel Daraban.

Daniel Daraban is from Kharkiv, Ukraine. May be that explains why this progressive house track comes with such a dark tinge. But perhaps you shouldn’t over-add geopolitics to music. Whatever, Conundrum delivers on the title and equally doesn’t.

It delivers a dark opening section that rides a dark techno-ish bass. But the conundrum is there in the promise of something more melodic later as synths come in to twist and writhe around. It’s a track for the darkness that isn’t afraid of the light. It’s not afraid to slow the pace and then up the pace. As the accompanying blurb says, “It is strong, powerful, gentle and fragile, it is everything and nothing at the same time.” For something quite so intense it manages to work exceptionally well as home listening. It’s littered with hooks that deliver full enjoyment.

Ambient Sunday does guitar: Foli – Serenity #Ambient #LoFi #Guitar

•April 18, 2021 • Leave a Comment

Just the one for today’s Ambient Sunday. But it’s a beautifully peaceful way to spend two minutes. Thnak you Foli.

Foli (“leaf” in latin) is an independent bedroom music producer and multi-instrumentalist based in Toronto, ON (although his Bandcamp says Vancouver, British Columbia). The track is Serenity. It’s a lo-fi crackly affair, with birdsong but focusing on a guitar that gently plucks away. It comes with the message, “May this tune give you peace – escaping the everyday stress that you might experience.” Beats come slow and not too intrusively. It’s all terribly, terribly lovely. Enjoy your day.

Charming melodic house with: Wilborn – Lost #House

•April 17, 2021 • Leave a Comment

Sometimes I want a challenge and sometimes I want a caress. This is the latter. A lovely melodic house track from Wilborn.

Wilborn is probably from Norway. But I know no more than that. The featured track is Lost released on Routine Espresso Recordings. It’s a mix of some chilled lo-fi house with a bit of deep house lush smoothness. There’s an 80s type twangy bass line that provides the throbbing heart of the track. Overlaid are rippling synths and almost vocal elements. This gives it a hummable quality that further draws you in. And the video of the Sacramento River offers more slack-jawed charms.

It’s all deliciously dreamy and forget-your-cares melodic stuff. Given where we are right now we all still need a bit of that.

Study breakbeats with Johny Holiday – Berlin 98 #Chill #Instrumental #StudyBeats #BreakBeats

•April 16, 2021 • Leave a Comment

A bright but bitterly cold morning needs something warming. Here’s Johny Holiday to warm the cockles of your heart with some downtempo breakbeat on Berlin 98.

Johny Holiday is a Swiss artist from Basel. Since 1997 he has been part of the Hip Hop crew Brandhärd and has produced beats for various Swiss rap artists – not tbh that I knew there was a Swiss rap scene. Anyhow, he’s now branching out making his own stuff. And Berlin 98 is his new release.

Berlin means techno to me. So this tune was a bit of a surprise. It’s an absolutely charming track but contains no techno. From the opening child’s shout out to the tinkling piano refrain this consistently confounded my expectations. It starts whimsically before getting down to business with some beats that have a hip hop thud but also a lithe breakbeat tinge. Strings saw away in the background. It leans towards ambient before the beats pull it away at the last moment. It’s all terribly cheery. And I love it.

Sunshine and study beats with: Mr. Erin, and kassamanno #StudyBeats #Instrumental #Jazz #HipHop #Chill

Blue skies, Spring sunshine and study beats with Mr. Erin, and kassamanno.

Mr. Erin is from Germany. Doesn’t offer more than that. But on his style he says, “I started making music in 2013 when I discovered dubstep. Since then I’m producing dubstep under the alias „Grawinkel“. In 2020 I dived into Lo-Fi and enjoyed it a lot.”

The featured track is the totally smooth and sophisticated Jazzmovie. Which is an odd title because this is less jazz infused than the usual study beats. It’s built around a lovely organ sound which has a bit of dubbiness going on from some choppy guitar. The beats lope around without a care in the world. Yes, it lasts no longer than the now traditional two minutes but who cares? This is a total chill delight.

Most study beats tracks work best in the evening or late at night with that slightly late night smokey jazz feel. But a few are best suited to the bright light of day. Tides by kassamanno is one of those.

Kassamanno is Canadian-producer glukes and is his new jazz-hop/study beats project. Tides has a languid jazz guitar and some softly brushed beats at the core of things. At its heart is a simplicity of approach – nothing’s crowded or complicated. Everything is super smooth such that teeters on the edge of lounge but never quite tips over. This is for rocking in the porch or swaying in a hammock listening to the waves.
