My guest today is the respected Canadian folk icon, Bob Snider. Bob is a fingerstyle guitarist, songwriter, and poet who has all the musicians at a festival running across the field to catch his set. Over the past 20 years, he has released 7 of his own albums and appeared on countless compilations. There has also been a tribute album made of his songs. He has written two books on Gaspereau Press: On Songwriting and On Performance. His new CD on Borealis Records is called ‘A Maze In Greys‘.

Gaspereau Press: On Songwriting and On Performance

Just to let you know that my hosting provider is moving servers, so this site will be down for about 8 hours starting at 10pmPST Friday November 30. It should be up again sometime Saturday morning (They are saying about 8 hours for the move).

The Edmonton Journal ran a weekly comic in the Mid 1980’s called Bub Slug. It’s authors eventually spun it off into a successful syndicated cartoon called Betty. In one memorable episode (at least I still remember it 20 years later), Bub and Betty came into some money and joined the Edmonton Cultural Society. The women of the cultural society were raising money to traslate Cats and 42nd Street into Italian, so as to make them cultural.

Today, Culture Canada launched podcasts.culture.ca to showcase Canadian culture in podcast form. My friends Hugh McGuire and Chris Goringe from Librivox were active behind the scenes setting this up. I’m not sure that it differs substantially in content from the amazing Canadian Podcast Directory at canadapodcasts.ca, but it is really neat to see my podcast and my picture featured on an official Government of Canada website.

That seals it. For the Sake of the Song is officially a Canadian Cultural Experience. Sort of like Tim Hortons and Beaver Tails I guess.

My guest today is my friend, Bob Ardern who I first met at Don’s Coffeehouse about 8 years ago. Bob is a fine fingerstyle guitarist and songwriter. He has released 4 CDs: two solo albums and two with Jennifer Ives as Don’t Panic. Bob has recently moved to Lunenberg, Nova Scotia. We will be miss him.

David Bradstreet is a veteran of the Canadian Music scene. For over thirty years, he has performed as a solo artist, as part of the band Lazarus, and as a producer and sound engineer. Here’s a brief bio from his website:

DAVID BRADSTREET is best known for his song ”Renaissance” (“Let’s Dance That Old Dance Once More”) – a hit for Canadian icon, Valdy. He has been recognized for his work as a singer/songwriter, composer and producer, nineteen albums bearing his name; a high profile Juno Award early in his career; three subsequent Juno nominations and music credits including a Gemini nomination; film and television soundtracks and scoring; talent discovery and record production for numerous artists from Jane Siberry to Colleen Peterson. He has toured extensively and is a veteran of many coffeehouses, concert halls and folk festivals.

David Bradstreet’s newest acoustic release, “Lifelines“, released June 27, 2006, was recorded live-off-the-floor (vocal, guitars and bass) in three days at Ray Montford‘s Soundhole Studio in Toronto, Canada with Jason Fowler and David Woodhead. Only some guitar overdubs and background vocals were added. As well as his own original compositions, this release includes songs that he has co-written with Robert Priest, Rob Lamothe and Jason Fowler. “Such a Fool”, a song by Billie Hughes, is also included.

I sat down with David at the Mariposa Folk Festival to talk about his career and songwriting.
