Contemporary Women Surrealists

Born from André Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto, the Surrealist movement of the mid-20th century combined imagery from reality and fantasy to become “a kind of absolute reality, a surreality.” While the contributions of women artists and the female perspective were central to the birth of Surrealism, few women artists from the movement have received widespread recognition for their work. Like their predecessors, contemporary artists continue to revel in the uncanny, tapping into the unconscious mind to reveal the depths of the human psyche. From Aida Muluneh’s striking photographs of female figures in otherworldly settings to Klara Kristalova’s sculptures of creatures part human and part animal, browse a collection of works by contemporary women surrealists to recognize.
