It's been a year since we relaunched the tech newsletter, and it's one of the best parts of my week. If you're not one of the tens of thousands (!) of people that gets exposed to my weird diary on Fridays, fix that here: Syd: Melb:

I'm aware that retro game music on vinyl could be viewed as fundamentally ridiculous. And yet I was compelled to treat myself anyway.

Nintendo has announced the Wii U and 3DS digital stores are shutting down next year. BUT it also launched this really cute memories website where you can turn your play data into charts. Did you know the Wii U even had 144 games?

Third biggest for me was more retro stuff. I love seeing hard-to-experience games like Live A Live, Chrono Cross and Front Mission restored, translated or expanded like this. I guess Portal, Klonoa and AC could be considered retro by some, and I'm glad they'll be on Switch too.

Second biggest deal was the return of Sports, which actually stands a chance of hitting audiences who remember Wii Sports, unlike the entirely ignored Sports Club on Wii U. Online play could be a huge deal for families that used to play Wii Sports together and are now apart.

Biggest deal from today was 48 new Mario Kart 8 courses over a year and a half. They saw how the Smash Bros Fighters Pass kept players coming back every few months for ages, and are doing the same here. I love it.

Fun little trick in the Sunday New York Times crossword yesterday: the central theme clue was "The better of two sci-fi franchises", and regardless of whether you put Star Wars or Star Trek, the crossing clues worked

Prices for old video games are rising, and not about to stop, but the exposure also means more and more people are getting into the retro hobby.
