Left Unity is a democratic party, run by its members. This page provides information about Left Unity’s structure and democratic processes.

Left Unity doesn’t have a traditional ‘party leader’ – it instead has elected spokespeople who express our democratically decided policies. Our current spokespeople are Sharon McCourt, Joseph Healy and Nick Jones.

Conferences – Left Unity’s policies are made by members at our conferences, which are usually annual. The conference is the supreme decision-making process within Left Unity.

National Council & Committees – Left Unity is led and organised between conferences by its National Council, a group of members elected by online ballot. Within the National Council there are officers with specific responsibilities and an Executive Committee responsible for the day-to-day running of the party. There are also other committees for various tasks.

Caucuses – Left Unity is committed to fighting all oppression and discrimination. Caucuses are self-organised groups of party members organising against oppressions.

Tendencies – As a pluralist party, we encourage debate and new ideas. Tendencies are organised groups of members who share a political point of view.

Constitution – In 2018 Left Unity adopted a new constitution.
