Lighting suspended from the ceiling, such as chandeliers, hanging lights, and hanging lamps. Wealthy homeowners in Europe, such as those seen in the Arnolfini Wedding Portrait (1434) began installing chandeliers as of the 15th century. Silver chandeliers appeared in France and England from the 16th century, and in the 19th century, gas and electric lighting became available. As in all areas of design, the discovery of new materials and improvements in manufacturing technology in the 20th century allowed for great innovation in lighting.
