  • Tropical Cyclone Watch for Cape Flattery to Lucinda

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology Tropical Cyclone Advice For Queensland Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre Media: The Standard Emergency Warning Signal should NOT be used with this warning. PRIORITY TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 4 Issued at 04:53 AM EST on Monday 01 March 2021 Headline: Tropical low near-stationary and slowly developing off the north tropical coast of Queensland. Areas Affected: Warning zone: None. Watch zone: Cape Flattery to Lucinda. Cancelled zone: None. Details of Tropical Low at 4:00 am AEST: Intensity: Tropical Low, sustained winds near the centre of 65 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 95 kilometres per hour. Location: within 35 kilometres of 17.3 degrees South 148.0 degrees East, estimated to be 250 kilometres east southeast of Cairns and 215 kilometres east of Innisfail. Movement: slow moving. The tropical low has been near-stationary off the north tropical coast in the past 12 hours, and is expected to remain slow-moving while continuing to develop today and Tuesday. It is expected to reach tropical cyclone strength on Tuesday morning. Although a direct coastal impact by the centre of the cyclone is unlikely, the system may approach close enough to the coast to produce gales about exposed coastal and island areas from the latter part of Tuesday. Heavy rainfall is also likely about the coast and nearby ranges. In the longer term, the system is expected to take a southeasterly track late in the week while remaining off the coast. Hazards: GALES are not expected during the next 24 hours, however GALES with gusts to 100km/h may develop about exposed coastal and island areas between Cape Flattery and Lucinda, including Cairns and Innisfail, on Tuesday afternoon depending on the movement and development of the system. HEAVY RAINFALL has begun to affect the coast and ranges south of Innisfail, and may develop about remaining coastal and island areas between Cape Flattery and Lucinda, including Cairns and Innisfail, over the next several days. A Flood Watch is current for the north tropical coast between Mission Beach and Rollingstone; refer to that product for more information. ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES are likely in the Watch area over the next several days. Large waves may produce flooding near the foreshore. People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to help their neighbours. Recommended Action: People between Cape Flattery and Lucinda, including Port Douglas, Cairns, and Innisfail, should consider what action they will need to take if the cyclone threat increases. - Information is available from your local government - For cyclone preparedness and safety advice, visit Queensland's Disaster Management Services website (www.disaster.qld.gov.au) - For emergency assistance call the Queensland State Emergency Service (SES) on 132 500 (for assistance with storm damage, rising flood water, fallen trees on buildings or roof damage). Cyclone advices and DFES Alerts are available by dialling 13 DFES (13 3337) A map showing the track of the cyclone is available at: http://www.bom.gov.a
