Tell me about your bff…..tag your bestie! (post inspo: @francislola)
When we first met Kiki, she was just a shy little college student/slash model. We booked her as the model for our jewelry line, having no idea that she was also a legit, bad-ass heavy metal guitar player and would become a bandmate, and ultimately a sister.
Some of the funniest memories include shocking timid hotel guests in Japan (Kiki fell asleep in full band attire in front of the elevator), swimming with 5000 sea lions in Peru (was that safe???), eating an entire duck EACH in Macau (and keeping it a secret because we didn’t want to share) and on and on…..
We get along for many reasons including a shared love for eating and the fact that we both grew up feeling displaced (how many Asian girls do you know that listen to rock music?). Also, even though we are super girly and fake eyelashes, we still have the nerdy Asian gene. It’s not every day that you can find someone you can bond over SEO Analytics and cat videos. On top of that we are both awkward and extremely introverted.
I’ve never understood why some women don’t get along with other women. I’ve always had tons of guy friends, but I am a girl’s girl at heart. Girlfriends are forever! Guy friends on the other hand…..they kind of drop off after they get in a relationship or get married. I’m not mad at that…. I wouldn’t want my man to have a bunch of female friends either.
It was actually one of the most common questions asked when we were in the band: “how do you get along??” The assumption was that there were endless catfights. We naturally had our disagreements, but ultimately the most drama came from everyone around the band: overbearing boyfriends (or gfs), shady managers, crazy and random hanger-ons, etc….
As for the bandmates? It was always us against the world. (at Los Angeles, California)
