Join our global network of New Internationalist contributors

New Internationalist is currently published bi-monthly in print, as well as online, and covers topics ranging from fracking to gender equality, and trade deals to technology – we offer a unique perspective on the biggest issues facing the world today.

Are you a journalist with experience in writing concise, clear stories for an international audience? Do you read New Internationalist and think you could contribute a high quality article along similar themes and from an internationalist perspective? If so, we’d like to hear from you.

We regularly commission pieces from freelancers, however, we do receive a large quantity of pitches. If you are interested in contributing, please refer to our submissions guidelines below before sending a submission to us, making sure to include your main areas of expertise and links to samples of previously published work. Here’s how to become a New Internationalist contributor:

Please see below for full details of how and who to pitch to.

Please note that if you are contacting us with a pitch or submission, we may keep your details on file for commissioning relevant pieces in future. If you would like us not to do this, please let us know.

Pitches for the magazine

Submissions should be sent to amy.hall[at]newint.org – I will always acknowledge receipt so that you know when the pitch will be discussed. The editorial team meets once a month to go through speculative pitches. Only those whose pitches have been successful will then be contacted – so if you haven’t heard from us within two weeks of the editorial meeting, you should assume that your story has not been successful.*

A submission is more likely to be successful if:

  • The writer has a clear understanding of our audience and has written accordingly. If you’ve not seen a recent copy of New Internationalist, please see our website for samples of articles printed in the past. In a nutshell, we need popular, clear, non-academic writing on issues of interest to our international readership. For example, if you submit a piece focusing on domestic politics/issues, it will need a global perspective/resonance.

  • The article clearly adds something to our mission, which is ‘to bring to life the people, the ideas and the action in the fight for global justice’.

  • The writer has considered which section of the magazine their article might best fit, and written or pitched it accordingly (i.e. taken note of the word length for such articles, the area of interest, the tone/angle etc).

  • Please give us an idea of how many words you expect the piece to be. Please also give us an idea of where you imagine the piece fitting in the magazine: is it a Currents piece, feature, long-read or photo essay? (See below for more information on submitting photo pieces.)

  • The piece is not too time-sensitive. We have long lead times and normally meet around the middle of each month to discuss submissions.

* Please note: although we do commission freelancers on a rolling basis, we end up having to reject the vast majority due to lack of suitability, lack of space in the magazine or timeliness due to our long lead times.

Following these guidelines will make it more likely that your pitch will be accepted.

If you are commissioned, please also include a 1-2 line bio (30 words) at the bottom of the piece when you submit your article. We generally prefer articles to be sent to us as Open Document (.odt) or Word (.doc/.docx) format files.

If you would like to be added to the bimonthly call-out for pitches for Currents (the magazine’s front section, which is made up of 4-600-word news stories) then email hazel.healy[at]newint.org with a bit about yourself and published clippings.

Pitches for the web

We welcome pitches for articles: our web exclusives range from features on under-reported topics around the world, important social movements and struggles in the fight for global justice, to radical opinion pieces with an international – or internationalist – perspective, making interesting and original arguments you wouldn’t see elsewhere. We also welcome pitches for short online videos or multimedia projects.

The topics we cover span social justice, global inequality, the environment, feminism and liberation struggles, tech politics and more. To pitch to the website please fill out our Web editorial submission form.

Photographers

Please browse through the site or magazine to see the type of images we normally use. If you are a photographer who would like your work to be considered, or you would like to submit a photo essay, please send them to kelsi.farrington[at]newint.org or to the web team (see above). We particularly welcome pitches from up and coming Global South photographers.
