Marble

About

Artworks and design objects wholly or partially composed of marble, a type of limestone that has recrystallized due to extreme heat. Historically, and especially during antiquity and the Renaissance, marble was one of the most highly valued stones for sculpture and architecture. Sculptors particularly favored its slight transparency, which lent it to renderings of human skin. Italian Carrara is probably the most famous type of marble, while the most iconic marble sculpture is arguably Michelangelo’s David.
