Their new album 'Christmas Carols With Libera' is available on CD plus digital formats. Taking on the mellow and the more upbeat songs in this collection, the boys of Libera had great fun. The likes of 'Ding Dong Merrily On High' require real precision, as well as purity. Many of the tracks were recorded during a group 'retreat' to a rehearsal space in an old school, this allowed a true live feel to the process. The boy who took the lead vocal on 'The Snowman' had just turned 9 years old, whilst the introductions to the French 'Noel Nouvelet' and the Irish 'Wexford Carol' are both handled by native French and Gaelic speakers, Libera is as polyglot as ever. The distinctive sound of Libera has travelled the world in the last few years. The group's albums have topped both mainstream and classical charts in many countries, and their recordings hold their place in top 10s alongside major artists. Libera's unique sound has endeared the group to fans all over the world, particularly in the USA, the UK, the Philippines, South Korea and Japan, where their CDs top the mainstream and classical charts and where they pack concert halls appearing in their trademark flowing white robes on imaginatively lit stages. Scholars have no idea how these spirituals were performed before the Civil War, but they agree that there was probably very little European influence. Dr. Kean's goal was to compose and arrange music in a style that is evocative of the enslaved Africans' frame of mind based upon their west African musical heritage and in their sociological context. He chose to accompany the spirituals with kalimba (thumb piano) to honor the west African tradition of connecting with ancestors and the marimba to sound like the west African balafon. Medium to difficult. Charlie Beale and Steve Milloy : Popular Voiceworks at Christmas Following the success of the two Popular Voiceworks volumes, Popular Voiceworks at Christmas presents a fantastic collection of seasonal songs and carols in a highly practical format. Ellington, Corea, Brubeck, Hersch, Porter, Lennon and McCartney, Lins and Cuba's Cervantes are the welcoming prisms for them to ring their voices into a fine tapestry of color, sound and light. Produced while celebrating their 30th year together as an ensemble, they have gathered this collection into what is a curator's wish list for an evening's program. Taking these compositions in their care, they tend to invert, change time signature and reharm, but never so far that the lyric doesn't sing front and center. And with intermittent a cappella palate cleansers throughout the sequence, the listener gets to experience the set as the artist envisioned. Also included in this fine array of compositions are two from the group, allowing just enough room to insert a few originals to complete their "Reminiscing in Tempo." Introduces simple movements-stepping and clapping-to help the ensemble explore kinesthetic feeling connected to harmonic rhythm, not meter. Teaches fundamental principles of artistic phrasing. Revolutionizes ensemble teaching to focus on how sound moves forward, and not on rhythm notation. Teaches the important distinction between rhythm and tempo, and harmonic rhythm. Builds legato and sense of line. Introduces the new concept of "projection" to teach and conceptualize phrase shape. The Ensemble Movement Warm-Up is the culmination of 40 years of experimentation, thought, and study using the wealth of ideas provided by Laban and is a major contribution to the choral art.
