In South Australia, it costs $8.70 per page to have a court transcript emailed to you. The transcript of the Coronial inquest into the Indigenous Death in Custody of Wayne Fella Morrison runs to 7791 pages. That's $67,781.70. A years salary. A home deposit.

‘I struggle every day with the loss of my former life’: what it’s like to live with chronic pain - I read through 700+ readers' responses to this call out, and I tell you, it crushed me. We have to do better!

  4. The pursuit that ended with the death of Raymond Noel was over in 21 seconds. There was no pursuit controller allocated - the police officer in the passenger seat had just picked up the radio to have that conversation when they saw the crash.

  5. The officer driving the car in this case is a gold class driver, very experienced, and trains others in the pursuit policy. He agreed with the counsel assisting that putting those two questions in the training guide, to trigger an assessment, would be helpful.

  6. Olle says most pursuits that he sees — so those that end in a fatality — don't go on long enough for people to get to the point of a considered risk assessment with a pursuit controller on the radio. "They go from nothing to 150km/h to all over, often in under a minute."

  7. The assistant commissioner says that's already covered under the risk assessment in the current policy. Olle says it may be — but he questions whether that policy practically translates to help officers making split second decisions.

  8. Olle is suggesting there be two questions — kind of like a pilot checklist — to trigger a risk assessment. They are 'what am I conducting this pursuit for?' (i.e. is it actually worth the risk) and is 'are my actions adversely affecting the behaviour of the driver'.

  9. Combative conversation between coroner John Olle and Victoria Police assistant commissioner for road policing Libby Murphy, in the inquest into the death in custody of Aboriginal man Raymond Noel. They're debating the pursuit policy — something Olle has heavily investigated.

I feel bad for the hotline people today, getting calls from people following the premier's advice, only to have to explain that they're still waiting on approvals from the state health department before they can actually do anything. It's so disorganised.
