Just got this automation working and figured I'd share.

  • Screenshot

  • Uses node-red-node-email to receive notification emails.

  • When it gets an email from orders@eat.grubhub.com, it parses out the restaurant name from the subject (I'm not doing anything with this yet, but could be useful to send notifications to other devices).

  • Turns on my light via zwave2mqtt

  • Turns it back off after 2 hours (I thought about having it parse out the estimated arrival time from the email and turning it off based off of that but... that's too much)

I have a gmail filter that forwards emails from orders@eat.grubhub.com to a separate inbox (just to keep things separated from my normal email). The basic email node polls for the most recent email, which is fine if you have low volume of emails, but I went a bit overboard and setup poste.io in a docker container that receives email for @mydomain.com and routes them to my nodered container (the email node package has a node that runs its own smtp server to you can get emails pushed instead of polling)

TLDR: the main question is around bathrooms. If converting the switches, do I use dimmers?

Smarthome project started 4 years ago with Wink and only converted 8 switches to smart (GE zwave). Just moved to Hubitat and motivated to finish the switch conversion job while we're stuck in the house during the cold. ha. I just counted and have 14 more switches to do, and 3 of them are two-way!! I have a box of switches I had previously purchased but need more.

Anyway, since I am replacing more switches I am leaning towards going heavy with dimmers. Just in case.

I like the idea of setting a morning mode so that lights are on but dimmed, including the bathroom.

  • Bathrooms: This is the most controversial one. Should we have dimmers? I like the idea of getting up early to go to bathroom and not be blasted by bright LED lights. But how practical is it to use? We have the GE rocker switches so if it were 100% dim from last night and this morning I want dim, its tap-tap-tap to reduce. I think with hubitat some logic could be put in around that "if before 6am set to 30%". Or a named morning mode activated from Alexa.

  • Dining Room: YES. No dimmer now, and too many times I want to dim. this wasnt done before as this is the one (double) switch in the house without neutral. (I am going to fix this, this weekend. Or then hire an electrician if too challenging.)

  • Living Room: the LR we dont really use but makes sense to support dim. also on that no neutral switch

  • Bedrooms: We dont have dimmers now. Just makes sense to have them. obvious I guess. We have LED bulbs in the ceiling fans and can just be way too bright.

Any thoughts/comments are appreciated!

I currently have a Lifx beam outside my office door which I can change from red to green with a flic button at my desk. This tells my family if I am on a meeting or not and therefore if it’s safe to walk in.

What I’d like to do is automate this to sync with my calendar via Outlook 365. I’ve seen there are API syncs I can do with Google Calendar, however our company restricts syncing our professional calendar outside of the approved software.

Any ideas?

Hi All

I have large light on my landing and a little light in my hallway. I really wanted to make the landing light smart. I bought a Mini R2 and cracked open both light switches, the upstairs one has no space behind it, my down stairs light switch has space but looks a mess and I cant seem to figure out how on earth I could get the Mini R2 working with this.

The landing celling rose is about 10 ft high on some stairs so not practical for me to mess about with that, so was hoping to have an in switch solution.

Both lights are connected to more than one light switch.

Here is an image representation of the what I found behind the switch. Your help is much appreciated thank you in advance for taking a look.
