Will "Capitalism: A Love Story" Come to Guam?

My answer to the question that is this blog's title, is a hopeful "hunggan" or "yes." I've been following this film for a while, although I admit, that he kept a lid on this one up until recently, unlike Sicko . I guess the lack of knowing and the relative dark that I've been kept in, has just increased my desire to see it. Moore's movies always have a sort of radical Americanist edge to them. They are absolutely patriotic and America-loving, but in a critical sense, always in the hopes of using such rhetoric in order to push the United States to recognize hypocrisy, to change itself, to change the direction its heading. When I watch Moore's film, I'm less conflicted or mixed then I am with other liberal or progressive critiques. Despite the fantasies of conservatives or Republicans, liberal rhetoric is just as exceptionalist, just as forgetful as that of conservative Republicans and can therefore be just as violent and colonial as the wors

They are funneling in millions of dollars to compete with and ultimately drive away independent bloggers so that they can rule the Internet. And the kind of cash they are pouring in is staggering. It's hard to compete with that since the economy is way down, and I think what we've accomplished is in jeopardy if the Internet doesn't step up to help us all, including other blogs that you like.

Plenty of things going on this coming weekend and so I thought I'd post info on all of them. Even if you're not on Guam its still important to keep up to date with what's happening on the island. Although when I was younger I would always hear that there's nothing happening or nothing to do on Guam , this is absolutely not the case anymore. Right now, there is, at some points, too much going on! ************************************************ OCT. 24 - "Puengen Spondylus" The Guam Gallery of Art and the Chamorro Artists Association present their fourth Orange Night, Spondylus Night, from 6 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 24 at The Guam Gallery of Art at the Chamorro Village in Hagåtña, during Arts and Humanities Month, in celebration of the Chamorro culture and in remembrance of their ancestors. There will be a special presentation by Christine Choe, an association member, who was selected to represent Guam at the recent ninth China Changchun International Sculpture

You May Tell Yourself...This is Not My Beautiful Island!

The new Oliver Stone movie will be out tomorrow and I'm very excited about it. For better or for worse, Oliver Stone movies were one of my first very concrete experiences of being masumai or dunked into a historical context, and not hating or loathing it. Despite the creative liberties taken in the films, there is something often more real about them then actual real life, as if through fiction you can actually reach what "really" happened in a way that if you simply video taped the world you couldn't. Films such as JFK, Platoon, Nixon and Born on the Fourth of July, all brought me into American history in such a way that I was both entranced and disgusted. For me, and you may disagree, but JFK and Platoon were riveting stories, and Nixon was a film I thought I would detest or find boring, but like most Oliver Stone films I found myself wrapped up in it, and embodying what was probably the base intent of the film, that more people both understand Nixon and hate him.

Madeleine After Iraq

About six months ago I posted my first video on Youtube, which was a news brief made by the US Air Force about a town hall meeting that they had had with the residents of Guam about the impending military buildup. I've been meaning to put another one up for a while but haven't gotten a chance yet. So since I have a spare moment now I thought I'd put one up real quick. I didn't make this video or the other one, but just stumbled across them while surfing the net for Guam stuff and thought they should be something that Chamorros and others from Guam should be able to check out. This video is an interview with Guam's non-voting delegate to Congress Madeleine Bordallo, after she has just returned from a visit to Iraq and Kuwait. Here is the description that I put for the video, " Kumuekuentos Si Kongresu Madeleine Bordallo put I hinanao-ña giya Iraq. Ai kulang taisensia Si Bordallo. Puru ha’ minagof put i gera. Parehu ha’ todu i mampulitikÃ¥t siha. Ma na’fanhana

I've got a busy next couple of days ahead. I'm driving up north to attend Famoksaiyan meeting on Sunday, and I've also got a paper that I'm writing on the presence and absence of decolonization amongst Chamorro organizing in the diaspora, that I've got to finish by the end of the weekend. Don't know when I'll be able to post again for reals, so for now let me sate all of you with some Naruto videoes. I used to hate Naruto, gof taimamahlao na lahi, gof a'gang yan na'estotba. He's so annoying to read, s a' mampos ti kalamya gui', lao todu tiempo manggagana! Todu tiempo ha na'hahasso yu' put Yu-Gi-Oh GX. Ya ayu mampos gof ti ya-hu! What I'm posting below is a battle between Orochimaru and the Third Hokage (from the TV show), and just happens to be the fight from the manga that finally got me hooked into the Naruto universe. Over the summer, my nephew Kinboy left volume 14 in my room on Guam, and over a few weeks I flipped slowly

Culture of Life

********************* Published on Monday, October 1, 2007 by CommonDreams.org Bolivia’s Evo Morales Wins Hearts and Minds in US by Deborah James and Medea Benjamin While Iranian President Ahmedinejad stole the headlines during the United Nations meeting last week in New York, Bolivia’s President Evo Morales - a humble coca farmer, former llama herder and union organizer - stole the hearts of the American people. At public events and media appearances, Bolivia’s first-ever indigenous president reached out to the American people to dialogue directly on issues of democracy, environmental sustainability, and social and economic justice. Morales appeared at a public event packed with representatives of New York’s Latino, labor, and other communities, speaking for 90 minutes - without notes - about how he came to power, and about his government’s efforts to de-colonize the nation, the poorest in South America. At first, he said, community organizations did not want to enter the cesspo

Bice on the Buildup

I was searching around Youtube last night, looking for videos and music to keep me company while I was cleaning up my room and working on an article I intend to submit to the journal The Ethnic Studies Review. Gi i umaliligao-hu, I found these videos of General Bice speaking on KUAM News Extra speaking about the proposed military build up to the island. Its important whenever you read or listen to i fino' i militat, through speakers such as Bice, to not simply believe what they are saying, but to connect what they say to the history of the island (and not just the "liberation" of the island in 1944), namely the treatment of Chamorros by the United States military, and thus pay very close attention to what the military is not saying or intentionally being vague and coy about. For instance while the military is always more than willing to throw around figures like $15 billion, they are very hesitant and unwilling to tell us what exactly that number is supposed to mean, a

My brain has been a little off lately, and I think its because my mind has been persistently occupied by a strange mixture of things. Lately I've developed this unnerving habit of having two songs in my head at once, both of them playing at the same time, and in their unholy mixture insisting very forcefully that I seek them out in the real world and listen to them repeatedly until the barrage is gone. Sometimes the yinalaka isn't too bad like when the songs go well together, or just sound like an exciting new mix. Or sometimes its not even obvious that two songs are intertwined because the songs sounds so similar or are from the same artist. Its common for instance for me to get the songs "Crazy" and "Crying" by Aerosmith stuck in my head at the same time, and think that the song I need to listen to is "Amazing." The past few days have been slightly strange, because my brain has been a muddled mess of two very different songs, and the Cricket Twe
